UOG TOP PICK - RAB's Charge Jacket - Lightweight all rounder - We've singled out RAB's Charge Jacket because its a great example of a lightweight waterproof jacket. The fabric performs well, it has a well designed hood and all the right features.

RAB's Charge Jacket uses the highly respected Pertex Shield+ but this time with stretch. A neater hood than helmet compatible ones and two high set chest pockets complete this impressive shell.

Rab says: The Women's Charge Jacket is a stripped-down waterproof jacket, using a stretch Pertex Shield+ fabric, designed for light-weight and packable all round protection.

Key features include an adjustable hood with roll-down closure, YKK AquaGuard zips throughout, and an integrated stuff sack for packing the jacket away.

The Women's Charge Jacket is made using high quality Pertex Shield+ fabric with stretch, which offers high levels of breathability, lending this jacket to long days walking on the hill or as an emergency piece when climbing in wet conditions.

This piece is designed in a regular fit which can accommodate mid-weight layers underneath.

|Pertex Shield+ Fully Waterproof Breathable Fabric - with high 20,000mm Hydrostatic Head and high 20,000g MVTR breathability rating Pertex Shield+ delivers very high performance at very low weight. Click Logo to read more...

RAB's Charge Jacket is made from Pertex Shield + 2.5Layer fabric with a stretch component woven into it. Pertex Shield + has an excellent reputation as a super lightweight waterproof and breathable fabric so we know this jacket is going to perform well.

The Charge jacket differs from the Spark (which is a similar jacket) by having stretch in the fabric, a smaller hood and a different pocket arrangement, making it more suited to a trekking application. The fabric also feels noticably softer than the standard Pertex Shield+.

The garment is well designed with a technical, fully adjustable hood, water resistant zips throughout and velcro adjusted cuffs.

2.5 layer fabric is not as durable as 3 layer but its a key part of getting the fabric this light - so backpacking through days of rain with a 20kg pack is probably going to overwhelm it - but if you're packing light and don't expect to be wearing a waterproof constantly then the Charge could be a good choice.
