When it comes to design the quality manufacturers have got waterproof shells sorted and RAB is one of the best. Choosing a jacket then comes down to fabric and features. Rab's Firewall Jacket uses a 3 layer Pertex Shield+, as its three layer this means that its a bit more durable than 2.5 layer garments that only have a scrim covering over the inside face of the membrane.
Not all Pertex Shield+ is the same and this one has stretch, that makes for a more comfortable fit, this will be especially apparent if you are (say) scrambling part of a route, or if you're pegging out a tent in the rain. Its got good waterproof ratings and although breathability isn't quoted Pertex Shield+ is pretty good in all its forms.
Feature wise there's a fully adjustable hood and three good pockets. The main zip is backed by an internal flap for comprehensive protection and the velcro cuffs have the anti-snag version that will protect your other layers.
The pit zips are interesting as they start at the pit seam and track down the inside of the arm almost to the wrist. This will vent the arms better than it will the upper body area, but it makes them easier to operate.
The Firewall is a good all purpose shell that should be comfortable, high performing and relatively durable (given its low weight).
