With a very low pack size and weight of just 150 grams (medium) the Montane Litespeed jacket is said to be a versatile item perfect for fast paced activities where saving weight is paramount.
The entire jacket is made of super thin Pertex Quantum ECO 100% recycled nylon outer with DWR. We found the Litespeed to be a great outer layer for keeping out moderate wind speeds and it impressed even offering protection against intermittent showers. As such a thin layer it was perfect for use on the warmer days where a more traditional heavier waterproof shell might be overkill for the conditions.
Fitting neatly away into an easy to reach pocket, the low pack size made for a quick and easy option against the elements when required but also came in very handy when the wind speeds dropped and the inevitable midges would come out in force. The low-profile cuffs offer a good hold around the wrist but also open up wide enough to be placed further up the arm. An adjustable hem with cinchable drawcord is a great touch to keep out any unwanted draughts.
The hood resulted in mixed opinions. With no tensioners, the elasticated strips offer just enough hold in low wind speeds. However, to offer a secure fit the hood is best placed over a cap or underneath a helmet. We found the wired peak most useful for placing a midge net over to keep the mesh fabric away from our faces.
Two large pockets came as a welcome surprise for a jacket of this type and can easily hold a full size map and compass, mobile phone, etc. Placement of the pockets is a little lower than we might usually like as they do interfere with a hip belt or harness.
Breathability was decent enough. We usually expect more from the Pertex Quantum fabric and found the lower arms and back would often be areas in where a build up of sweat most likely appeared. The Litespeed for us was better suited when worn for short spells rather than a jacket for periods of extended use.
The fit in a medium is relaxed, lending itself well for being placed over thin layers or a low profile insulated jacket, making it a great option for three season use.
The Litespeed currently comes in two dark colour options. The Shadow version we received is a mix of dark grey and black and quite plain in styling. As the Litespeed is traditionally for faster paced activities the addition of some brighter colours as with previous models would be welcome.
The Montane Litespeed jacket is an ultralight windshell, with a minuscule pack size, that offers good protection from moderate wind speeds and intermittent showers. The super thin Pertex Quantum ECO 100% recycled nylon fabric makes for easy storage, great as a quick option to suit warmer conditions or fast paced activities. Breathability wasn’t quite up to the standards of similar built jackets we have used, although for our use we tended not to use it as an all-day jacket, and instead as a quick and light solution for changing weather conditions.
