RAB's Ascender Pants are a tough softshell option for use in Winter and the colder months of Spring and Autumn. Reinforced at key points.
Rab says: A combination of heavy and midweight Matrix DWS stretch double weave softshell to provide wind and water resistance and high durability for mountain use in cooler conditions.
RAB's Ascender Pants are a tough heavyweight softshell pant that are ideal for changeable wintry conditions. They don't have any insulation in them - for winter walking you have a couple of choices - there are some very good softshell trekking trousers with insulating liners, but these can be hot when the weather isn't so cold - alternatively you can use something like the Ascender pants along with a pair of leggings when the temperature drops.
By going the Ascender route you can use these pants during more of the year than with insulating pants. We've used Matrix DWS in various RAB garments in recent years and we know its good - tough, comfortable but most importantly it performs well as a softshell fabric.
There are reinforced kick patches at each ankle which will protect them from a stray crampon if you are using them in winter conditions and a slightly heavier fabric is used on the knees and seat. The ankle hem can be cinched in with a shocord and there are tiny eyelets that would allow you to fasten them under your instep.
These are a good option if you want a tough pair of trekking pants that you can use in winter and in changeable conditions during Spring and Autumn.
