Montbell's Permafrost Light Down Parka brings all of the warmth without all of the weight. The Gore-Tex Infinium outer provides a windproof shell that stops any heat from being stripped away from you no matter how windy it gets.
Many other Montbell pieces are known for their super lightweight outer material that feels very delicate, but this jacket feels tough. The 30D Ballistic nylon ripstop fabric means I would feel confident wearing this as an outer layer, not just a mid-layer.
The inner pockets are large enough to hold a pair of winter gloves or even a pair of goggles. The soft fabric on the inside also allows the storing of phones and GPS devices, keeping them warm and preserving battery life in cold environments.
While not being fully waterproof, the jacket is very weather resistant thanks to the waterproof zips, and easy to use adjustments around the hood and wrists. A great feature Montbell have thought of is the extra baffle below the hood on the back of the neck, this area is usually empty of down in other jackets due to how the down usually settles, but with a dedicated baffle it leads to no chills going down your back.
