The bigger, warmer brother of the esteemed Micro Puff, the Macro Puff is built for colder, more extreme conditions, designed to keep you warm and your pack weight low for missions into the most frigid environs. With double the amount of insulation of the Micro Puff yet an associated weight gain of just 148 grams, this is a class-leading coat for warmth-to-weight ratio.

Patagonia says:

A notch up on the thermometer from its Micro Puff® cousin, the Macro Puff™ Hoody delivers even more high-loft, water-resistant warmth with PlumaFill insulation, a revolutionary, down-like alternative with all the benefits of a synthetic. Fair Trade Certified™ sewn.

Patagonia's Patagonia’s Macro Puff Insulated Jacket is the ideal synthetically-insulated layer for alpine objectives and treks where warmth-to-weight and durability are prime concerns. With 135g/sqm of premium PlumaFill insulation at a featherweight 418 grams for a Medium, this is a truly warm yet truly lightweight jacket, with very few competitors offering anything close to this level of warmth without a hefty weight penalty. The PlumaFill insulation itself is designed to mimic the properties of down, and as such it is phenomenally packable, while also maintaining its warmth when wet.

The strength of the Macro Puff is in its versatility – it functions excellently as both an outer layer and also as a mid-layer under a hardshell. For one jacket for mixed conditions in the winter months, the Macro has quickly become a go-to piece, as it is comfortable and warm in every locale. For such a lightweight jacket, it has a surprising array of features – internal drop pockets for larger items, handwarmer pockets for chilly digits, and plenty of adjustment at hem and hood to keep you snug and wind out. The fit is slightly boxy and long in the arm – I’d recommend your normal Patagonia size; no need to size up for use as an outer layer.

Better than down!

You can pretty much guarantee the experience of wet or at least damp conditions, when backpacking in the UK. Having experienced down jackets losing their performance in these conditions, I wanted a synthetic alternative to use through Autumn to Spring. Many of the synthetic insulated jackets are bulky or simply not as warm as a similar weight down jacket. Not so with the Macro Puff Hoody. It packs as small as my down jacket (in fact I pinched the stuff bag from my down jacket for it) and is at least as warm. It's a roomy fit, so you can fit a mid layer or 2 underneath for really cold conditions or put it on over the top of your shell etc for quick stops. On a recent trek in cool, humid conditions, my down quilt started to show signs of suffering from the damp but the Macro Puff was perfect. I can't see myself using my down jackets except in the Summer or in really cold Winter conditions now. The only downside is the price but it really is an exceptionally good jacket.
