Mountain Equipment says:

The optimum base layer for cold weather and expedition use.

Whether worn under hard or Soft Shell pants this is the most effective base layer you can use either on cold climbing days or extended expeditions. HeliumAP outer fabric and a specially developed Octayarn Warp-knit lining make the Kinesis Base Pants exceptionally warm and incredibly fast drying.

Hot pants!

These are surprisingly warm for the weight ... like a synthetic pant, just better fitting, and easier to ventilate - like the windproof areas, great for when using the pants around camp, or hiking in them, if really windy, just pull my WP pants over and they are very warm - so in all, very useful for winter hiking, to use as camp or travel to/from destination pants - and for sleep pants, easily adding 5+ or more degrees to your bags/quilts comfort rating in my opinion.
