British outdoor brand Montane has become synonymous with lightweight and breathable clothing and equipment. For over 25 years Montane has worked closely with serious mountain professionals working in hostile conditions across the globe as a proving ground for garment design. From the British Antarctic Survey to British Mountain Rescue Teams. Professionals who demand the toughest credentials from their clothing and equipment choose Montane.
The first to truly push the limits of single layer mountain clothing with the Extreme Smock and then, later realising the true value of windproof clothing, creating the first super packable, windproof and breathable wind shirt - the Featherlite Smock. The Featherlite Smock was probably the most functional and innovative piece of windproof garment design since Fridtjof Nansen, while planning the first crossing of Greenland over 100 years ago, realised that the windproof properties of a garment were the secret to moving quickly and comfortably in the mountains.
The importance of functionality in garments and packs does not stop at product design alone. Fabric technology is critical to producing the best product; Montane works with the world's leading fabric suppliers to engineer new cutting-edge materials that push the boundaries of what is possible with clothing, equipment and accessories to create the lightest, toughest and most functional products available on the market.
Endurance expeditions and athletes are critical in the development of our garment designs, ensuring Montane clothing is fit for purpose. They are our reason to be critical within our design processes. From unsupported ventures to the North Pole, smash and grab route attempts on the North Face of the Eiger to high profile scientific work in the high Arctic. All of these athletes help Montane develop clothing that will withstand the harshest of conditions, both physiologically and environmentally.
Where are the contemporary limits of endurance? They are in ultras. Imagine this: you've run 256 miles across the frozen Canadian Yukon. You've experienced consistent -30C and felt the low of -40C, you're cold and alone, and you still have 174 miles to go to the finish line...stay focused. In July you've run 65 miles of some of toughest trails in the British Lake District, some of the cruellest terrain underfoot in Europe. You've just left the shelter of a friendly checkpoint, and as you step out into the cold pouring rain, peer into the darkness and contemplate the terrain ahead, you realise you have 40 miles left until the finish line. From the Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra to the Montane Lakeland 100, this is one of the main areas where we believe endurance is being tested to the absolute limit and where Montane products thrive.
Montane have designed the Axis Alpha as a highly versatile thermoregulating jacket. The hybrid design provides an amazing balance of warmth and protection for changeable conditions no matter what you are doing this winter. This jacket combines traditional warmth in the form of hydrophobic down, active insulation with Alpha Direct combined with zoned outer fabrics with air permeable Pertex Air where breathability is most required and Gore Infinium where greater levels of protection are needed from the weather. This is a highly technical and very advanced piece of kit that will work well across a wide range of activities from climbing and mountaineering to hill walking.
The Axis Alpha Jacket is the ultimate piece of protective clothing for fastpaced activity in cold and changeable conditions. Based on cold chamber lab research and extensively athlete-tested, this jacket has been engineered with body-mapped fabric and insulation technologies from GORE-TEX INFINIUM™, PERTEX AIR and POLARTEC® ALPHA® DIRECT to balance protection from the elements with efficient heat and moisture management, keeping you comfortable when working hard in the elements.
The Axis Alpha has the following feature set
Montane have developed the Pac Plus XT Jacket and Pants in order to provide some serious protection in a lightweight and packable set of waterproofs. Despite the lightweight design The Pac Plus XT has an impressive feature set making them more practical and able to keep you more comfortable.
The use of Paclite Plus for a jacket is not new however, this XT version is made with 100% recycled 40 Denier GORE-TEX PACLITE PLUS. This is a great step in terms of Montane's environmental impact and especially so since it has no negative effect on the performance of the jacket. The addition of pit zips on this jacket also makes a huge difference in terms of comfort as it allows you to vent heat effectively, improving the breathability and reducing the build up of moisture associated with the Paclite membrane.
Using 100% recycled GORE-TEX PACLITE PLUS technology, the Pac Plus XT Jacket balances low weight and packability whilst still being rich in mountain features such as a helmet hood, 3 pockets and pit zips which can be used for venting when working hard climbing, scrambling or mountain walking.
The Pants are made with much heavier weight and more protective 150 Denier GORE-TEX PACLITE PLUS. Built to withstand the rigours of mountain activities these pants do an excellent job of standing up to abrasion from rocks and vegetation, especially with the added reinforcements from the SCHOELLER KEPROTEC KEVLAR insteps. Despite this seemingly heavyweight approach these pants are still impressively light in weight, highly packable and the 3/4 length two-way zip makes them practical too.
Using tough 150 Denier GORE-TEX PACLITE PLUS technology coupled with SCHOELLER KEPROTEC KEVLAR insteps, the Pac Plus XT Pants balance high performance and technical features with lightweight packability, making them ideal for fast and light mountaineering and mountain walking.
Arguably the most iconic piece of kit from Montane is the Terra Pant. These pants have been a staple for anyone after tough, lightweight mountain pants for years. With the amazing success and popularity of the Terra's over the years there have been numerous variations from a more packable, summer version to heavier weight winter pants.
The original Terra's are lightweight hard-wearing weather resistant and highly breathable trousers suitable for a wide range of outdoor sports. The Super's combine all the great technical features from the Terra range with well-conceived fabric technologies and features to make them the most durable technical mountain pants around. For this season both have received welcome updates.
Award-winning and best-selling, the Terra Pants are the ultimate lightweight, breathable and hard-wearing mountain pant, suitable for hill, trail and rock alike. The Terra Pants use a unique combination of high performance cottonfeel TACTEL® with tough CORDURA® rip-stop reinforcements. Both fabrics feature a PFC-free DWR for more environmentally friendly durable water resistance.
A modern classic, the Super Terra Pants are our most rugged technical mountain pants, designed for mountaineering, scrambling and everything in-between. Using tried and tested GRANITE and CORDURA® Hydro fabrics, they have been updated with some design improvements and styling upgrades. The Super Terra Pants are now lighter weight whilst still retaining their robustness and comprehensive feature set.
