The Kamleika Pants have been updated this season with improved breathability, improved durability and lower weight. They still have the same stretch, level of protection and great features from the older version.

OMM says:

On the track; an athlete wears a Lycra, on the mountain; a mountaineer wears a Gore-Tex Proshell. Kamleika takes the athlete onto the mountain with a shell layer that protects from wind and rain while stretching to give freedom of movement and so aiding athletic performance. Highly breathable, lightweight and now even more durable in a new Nylon face fabric. Kamleika is the choice for people who have recognised that they may have to wear a waterproof all day and yet still head for the fells anyway.

The Kamleika was, and still is, the original stretch running waterproof. Running in the mountains, in the rain, throws up as many challenges for kit as it does for people. This is particularly true when designing a waterproof pant where a blend of properties must be achieved. We demand durability, comfort, stretch, weather protective features, low weight, waterproofness and breathability, all of which must be balanced in the perfect combination. The Kamleika is OMM’s answer to this challenge. Updated for winter 2020 with a Nylon outer layer, it is now more durable than ever.

The History:

OMM invented stretch waterproofs a little over 20 years ago, and the Kamleika was the first waterproof to introduce true stretch. We’ve improved on the technology over the years to reduce weight, improve breathability and add features but the formula has stayed the same. Now in its 5th generation, the latest Kamleika fabric builds upon decades of design and thorough testing in the harshest of races..

OMM's 2020 Kamleika Pants uses the new and improved Kamleika fabric with a more durable nylon outer which still maintains a soft, stretchy and comfortable feel. It doesn't feel like traditional waterproof shell pants, in fact, the material doesn't feel waterproof at all. However, it is waterproof and it works really well with an increased level of breathability in this version. The weight reduction is a bonus since the performance stats actually improve with this new version.

This is a well designed piece of kit. They may not be ultralight in comparison to some of the more basic race pants but they are much more durable, have a number of excellent features and will be able to cope with the harshest conditions you are likely to encounter on the hills and mountains. A further  weight reduction in this model is a massive bonus since the adjustable waist, foot bungees, durable Dyneema zip panels with lace hooks have all been kept.

Good but tight waist

Wore these extensively on a long distance post-lockdown walking trip round Norfolk in December 2020. Generally very pleased with them, though we never actually had any torrential rain. I was pleased that the ankle zips and stretchy fabric made it possible to get these overtrousers on without having to take boots off. Also, the foot bungees (once I had figured out how to use them) seem quite effective in keeping the bottoms of the trouser legs in place, protecting the tops of boots. There were only two slight faults. First, I bought the Large size as I’m quite tall and slim - the length was fine but the waistband, even when slackened off to the maximum, was extremely tight. Second, the backs of the trouser legs don’t cover the heels of your boots, so if you have a tailwind and driving rain, water is liable to be funnelled straight down the back of them and into your boots.
