Mountain Hardwear's ThunderShadow jacket is a feature-rich jacket made from their own VaporDry fabric, the hood is excellent, with four external pockets and pit zips it is surprisingly lightweight.
Mountain Hardwear says: The ThunderShadow™ Jacket redefines what a rain shell can be. Mechanical stretch combined with VaporDry™ means superior comfort, excellent mobility, and waterproof-breathable performance. The unique backer quality makes it uncommonly comfortable among rain shells. The ThunderShadow™ Jacket handles wet-weather outdoor pursuits with ease.
Mountain Hardwear's ThunderShadow Jacket is made from their own 2.5 layer waterproof and breathable VaporDry fabric which has a mid range Hydrostatic Head and good Breathability performance of 26,000 MVTR. The face fabric is 40Denier which also puts it in the mid-range category for durability.
There are a lot of features on this jacket - for example there are four pockets on the front - two zippered hand pockets are protected by waterproof flaps and are quite large, however we found the actual opening of the pocket to be quite small - a bit at odds with the size of the pockets. These two pockets would be unusable if wearing a rucksack (with hipbelt) or a climbing harness - which is why there are two smaller pockets set high on the chest - both protected with water resistant YKK zips.
The ThunderShadow jacket also has pit zips, pit zips allow you to vent the jacket under the arms and providing the rain isn't horizontal you still manage to stay dry inside - some people like these others don't but we think they are a useful feature - especially if you expect to wear your shell jacket all day, in which case its essential to minimise condensation.
The ThunderShadow has an excellent technical hood that can be cinched around your head, the peak has a slight stiffening at the front which will help keep water off your face.
