The Lhotse Jacket is Mountain Equipment's best selling and award winning GORE-TEX Pro jacket for mountaineers who require absolute protection.

Mountain Equipment says:

The Lhotse jacket provides unstinting weather protection for those that head into the mountains whatever the weather. Whether battling blizzards on a Scottish winter Munro or tackling an alpine north face this is a serious shell for almost any occasion.

Gore-Tex logo at Ultralight Outdoor Gear|Garments made with Gore-Tex Pro fabric are durably waterproof, windproof and extremely breathable, providing ruggedness and durability for mountaineering and intense activities. Click here for more information on the range of GoreTex fabrics.

Mountain Equipment's Lhotse Gore-Tex Jacket is a great all-round mountain jacket as it's waterproof, durable and has all the features you would expect to see on a top-of-the-range £300+ jacket, without adding too much extra in weight.

What makes this jacket stand out is the use of two different face fabrics; there's GORE-TEX Pro 40D throughout the main areas of the jacket which is light yet tough, with even tougher GORE-TEX Pro 80D fabric reinforcements across the shoulders and down the sides of the arms for extra protection from rucksacks and abrasions.

The overall style of the jacket is nice, trim but not restrictive, though some may think it's a little short for a mountaineering jacket. The cut of the jacket has been designed so that the main zip sits flat down the front, preventing that awful bulging you tend to get with some waterproof jackets. There's also no stitch lines as most things are glued for a seamless face.

Feature-wise you've got everything you need, from highly water resistant zips to a helmet compatible hood with a stiff laminated peak. The hood actually fits just as well when not worn with a helmet thanks to the two adjustment points, one with Cohaesive cordlocks.

Superlative Gore Pro-shell Jacket

The Mountain Equipment Lhotse has been winning 'Best in Test' in the outdoor magazines for a few years now and it's easy to see why. It's not a cheap jacket but I cannot think of a Gore-Tex Pro-shell jacket with the same attention to detail and quality construction at this price point. For me, despite the price it represents great value for money. It should give many years of reliable service whatever you throw at it. The fit is superb and allows plenty of movement. The jacket is a bit longer in the body than purely climbing oriented jackets which offers better coverage for hill walking. The arms are a bit too long for me in normal use but make sense when using trekking poles (they cover the hands well) or if climbing. I'm not a climber but have used the Lhotse for some basic climbing and it worked well with a harness, offers free movement and the arms don't get uncovered when reaching up. As a proper kit geek it's the extra details on this jacket that make it stand out from anything else at this price point and most jackets above too! The beautifully laminated construction, the dual drawcords so that they can't snag like a loop would when climbing or scrambling, the superb hood design which provides excellent protection, etc. I tend to get sweaty in most shell jackets but the Lhotse has been more breathable than many I've used despite it's heavy duty feel and construction. I appreciate the pit zips which provide effective venting of the jacket when trekking uphill. I love my Lhotse jacket and have total confidence that it will provide the protection I need in the worst conditions I might encounter in the hills.
