UOG TOP PICK - Berghaus's VapourLight Hypertherm Hoody - Ultra-lightweight insulation - We've singled out Berghaus's VapourLight Hypertherm Hoody as one of our top recommendations because of its overall low weight. With features that have been designed to add minimal extra weight a high proportion of this jacket is the insulation itself giving it a high warmth to weight ratio. While it won't be as warm as much heavier jackets its warm enough if you're a fast mover and generating heat anyway.

The Hypertherm Hoody is an incredibly versatile piece of reversible insulation. Highly packable, it offers windproof protection and warmth that is light enough to be worn whilst on the move. Turning the jacket inside out allows more airflow into the insulation keeping your cooler during high exertion.

Berghaus says:

The Men's VapourLight Hypertherm Reversible Hoody is the ideal insulation piece for the highly active trail sport enthusiast. It can be worn in two ways, offering two distinct styles but also two levels of adaptable insulation performance.

The Hypertherm Hoody uses 40g Hydroloft Elite insulation providing ultra-lightweight warmth with a reversible twist, wear it one way round for wind proofing and the other for better cooling and breathability. The weight is a mere 221g (size Large) and comes complete with a hood and two zipped hand warmer pockets, it will work brilliantly on the move for walkers, trail runners, climbers and mountain bikers.

Berghaus' VapourLight Hypertherm Hoody is a versatile insulation layer. The wamrth that you'll get from this jacket can be slightly varied by which way round you were it. It's reverisble so the side with dual colours offers the most warmth due to that fabric being more wind resistant, whereas the mono coloured side breathes more and is therefore cooler.

Usually the difference in this type of garment between the two sides is about 10% more warmth. If this aspect interests you then great but it's not the be all and end all of the jacket, it's still a high quality lightweight insulating piece of kit. It packs down to almost nothing into the included stuff sack, ideal for when you need it most but you won't notice the extra weight in your pack.

Obscenely warm for something so thin!

I bought this for ultralight backpacking in summer conditions where only a little bit of extra warmth was needed on evenings or if the weather turns foul as it sometimes does in unpredictable and changeable UK conditions! It performs incredibly well on cool spring evenings. I have been sweating whilst moving on cool spring days it's that warm. It weighs virtually nothing and heats instantly. This is due to a membrane of insulation sandwiched between two layers of fabric rather than the usual fibres which need time to separate and disperse to trap heat. This also means that the piece should have greater longevity than competitors pieces and I look forward to this technology coming into sleeping bags possibly. It has an elasticated hood and sleeves. The zip and neck collar area ride surprisingly high to protect your face like a storm waterproof and prevent convected heat escaping from the neck collar area. It can also be turned inside out, with one side breathing faster when walking, whilst the other is better at blocking wind whilst stationery at the loss of some breathability. It packs away to nothing and also weighs nothing in my backpack. It really is a staggering piece and the grey version looks good too.
