Lowe Alpine's Northern Lights Jacket is a synthetic insulated jacket with a Pertex Endurance outer shell which provides a very high degree of water resistance - along with water repellent zippers its clear that this jacket is designed to shed quite a bit of weather before you need to put a waterproof jacket over it - much like a softshell would.
The beauty of this performance is that you don't have to put a waterproof jacket on if the weather's changeable - the Pertex Endurance shell will deal with intermittent light showery conditions without a problem. The outer fabric is also blessed with a matt finish that looks good.
We also like the features on this jacket - the hood can be cinched into the head meaning it moves as you move, there's a nice wide patch of fleece around the neck area and the arms are finished with a low bulk stretch cuff that gives a good seal yet won't hold water like a knitted cuff if it gets wet.
Add to that zoned insulation, 60g per sq m in the body and 40g in the arms and you have a very able jacket that keeps you warm and sheds showers.
