The Alpha Flash Jacket is a highly breathable, lightweight, packable active insulation using Polartec Alpha ‘Direct’ technology and zoned stretch fleece for active use.

Rab says:

Inspired by the latest innovations in fabric technology the Alpha Flash radically reinvents the traditional mid-layer.

From long, cold expeditions with limited resources to fast and light mountaineering the Alpha Flash distils everything you need into one mid-layer. Made from the exceptionally breathable Polartec Alpha, the fabric wicks moisture at an incredible rate, keeping you warm and dry even when you're right at your physical limit.

With flexible fleece panels either side, Alpha Flash will never hold you back; moving with you no matter how strenuous the climb. Extremely packable the Alpha Flash boasts an impressive warmth to weight ratio, making it the alpinist's ultimate cold weather mid-layer.

Rab's Alpha Flash Jacket uses Polartec Alpha breathable insulation, a more modern version of a lightweight fleece, that keeps you warm but lets sweat out, even when active. Polartec Alpha Direct insulation is basically the same but with the mesh liner removed, so you get more unimpeded airflow (not to mention less weight and bulk) without sacrificing warmth. It also feels super soft against your skin!

Designed to be worn when you are active - so on the move - there are alternative insulation garments that are more suited to wearing around camp - Polartec Alpha is about keeping you vented even though you are also being kept insulated. In truth the insulation value is quite moderate so it only really comes into its own when you are exerting yourself and you need insulation but can easily get clammy if the garment doesn't breath.

Its quite a breakthrough, especially for cold weather walking when you need insulation but start sweating hard when you reach a strenuous bit. Weight for weight Polartec Alpha is only about half as warm as Primaloft so the king of insulation keeps its crown - but Alpha has its place - I recently wore an Alpha garment all day while walking in Corsica in particularly cold conditions and stayed warm & comfortable for the duration - I kept checking my baselayer, which stayed completely dry.

This Alpha Flux jacket differs from the Alpha Flash jacket as it does not feature the outer shell fabric, instead it features stretchy, breathable Thermic fabric under the arms and down the sides for breathability and comfort. Because of this and the lack of hood, the Flash is over 100 grams lighter.

Excellent alternative to a fleece

The Rab Alpha Flash is a superb alternative to a fleece and makes a great layering jacket. The Alpha Direct is extremely comfortable against your skin with a short sleeve base layer. There is plenty of stretch too so it never feels restrictive. The Polartec Alpha wicks superbly transporting moisture away from your body and dries extremely fast but sadly the fleece panels don't match this level of performance. They wick well but take a lot longer to dry than the Alpha Direct which is a shame. Polartec Power Grid would probably have worked better. It's not enough to put me off the jacket but something for Rab to look at for a future update. It's incredibly warm for it's weight. The open knit of the Alpha Direct does mean that you need a windproof over it when the wind picks up. I've had loads of use out of the Alpha Flash and any reservations about durability are unfounded, it might have a long pile but it's been surprisingly tough and free of snags.
