UOG TOP PICK - Montane's 777 Jacket - Highest Breathability Rating in its class - We've singled out Montane's 777 Jacket as one of our top recommendations because of the fabric - this particular incarnation of Pertex Shield + has a very respectable waterproof rating but an outstanding figure for breathability, while being incredibly light weight. This makes it ideal for fast moving activities such as running and mountain marathons. Features are kept to a minimum to keep the overall weight down - consistent again with fell running and marathons.
Montane says: Supremely lightweight, breathable and packable alpine shell.
46g Pertex Shield+ fabric is one of the lightest weight 3 layer fabrics available. Combining a 7 denier 100% nylon face, 7 micron laminate film and 7 denier tricot backing, this fabric is waterproof with a 20,000mm hydrostaic head. It also has exceptional breathability, with an MVTR rating of 30,000g/m2/24hrs.

Montane's Minimus 777 Jacket is all about the fabric - it has an exceptional breathability performance combined with excellent Hydrostatic Head (waterproof rating). All Pertex Shield+ is not the same, and this version used by Montane has these exceptional characteristics at an amazingly low weight, and is three layer.
3-Layer fabrics are more durable than 2.5 layer because there is a full internal layer to protect the membrane from wear - 2.5 layer garments have a coating rather than fabric layer to do the same job - but its not as durable.
Having said all that this is a 140gram jacket, so durability is not its main feature and I wouldn't recommend this for backpacking where shoulder straps will rub the fabric - its more suited to mountain marathons where every gram is key and your rucksack is pretty small and light even when loaded.
In order to keep weight to a minimum features are also kept to a minimum with elasticated hem and cuffs, and a very simple hood, but there is a chest pocket, and a minimal width flap to cover the main zip.

This is the best waterproof jacket I have ever worn. Excellent breathability - much better than my old MHW Firefox with Gore-Tex Active membrane - and very lightweight. In cold environments (high altitude mountains 3000-5000 m) I use it as a windproof jacket too. My only negative remark is on the hood - it is very very simple and doesn't cover face very well. My face is easily wet even in light rain.
A brilliant piece of kit! Ultra light, rainproof and excellent for chilly mornings walking in the mist. Expensive but worth it !
