An incredibly light double woven Soft Shell that provides essential windproof protection for mountain rock routes and stripped back Alpine sprints.

Mountain Equipment says:

Making use of the lightest possible double weave Soft Shell fabric this windproof shell is a super breathable essential on alpine rock routes and fast moving enchainments. A close fitting hood accommodates a helmet when required and a single chest pocket stores the essentials whilst doubling as a stuff sack as the temperature rises.

Mountain Equipment describe the Aerofoil Jacket as using softshell fabric, we'd describe it more as a superlight windshell. It has a lot more features than your average windshell, with the volume adjuster on the hood which is simple but effective, the excellent quality and fairly rugged zips and the chest pocket. The pocket is big enough for smaller phones, your keys and some energy gels - perfect for a quick blast around the fells.

Perfect Summer Layer

Comfortable against the skin, great as a just in case layer that packs to nothing and can make a real difference due to its wind stopping ability. A perfect summer wind proof that has done some trips around Scotland on the high tops (and also proved to be fairly midge and cleg proof) but really excelled on European trips as an extra layer on hut to hut trips due to its great breathability. While a bit too light and breathable for Autumn to Winter, many of these heavier models are far less comfortable when the sun is out and working hard - and certainly don't pack to the size of an apple and weigh far less. It lost a star in this review due to the hood adjuster. The hood is fine over a baseball cap or similar but the volume adjuster is a bit of an afterthought and does not hold for more than 2 mins so needs re-cinching constantly or tying a knot in it.

Outstanding performance and weight

From late spring to early autumn this is my go to wind shell. It's incredibly light and comfortable especially in fluctuating temperatures and offers excellent protection against the wind and is surprisingly good at keeping light showers at bay. Being so light it packs down to about the size of my fist but more importantly there isn't much taking it off and putting it back on in middling weather. Whilst debatable about how true a softshell it is, it's a lot nicer feeling against the skin than 'shiny' windproofs. Highly recommended.
