Montane's Dyno Stretch Jacket is a really good example of this type of garment - one of the best we've seen. It has a comprehensive feature set not necessarily present on competitor garments, we like the technical hood with wired brim, four outer pockets with the waist pockets set above where a hipbelt would sit. The quality of construction is self evident.

Montane's Dyno Stretch Jacket is a midweight super stretchy hooded softshell with a technical hood and multiple pockets.

Montane says:

The Dyno Stretch Jacket is designed to be worn on long summer days in the mountains. Wear it on mountain routes either alone, over a baselayer, or as part of a layering system during more hostile weather.

Chameleon Kinetic fabric wicks hard, dries fast and features a four way stretch, so no matter how physical the movement, the Dyno Stretch Jacket will work with you. Fully featured, technically tailored and durably constructed, the Dyno Stretch will give you years of great service.

In the world of softshells there are those jackets that are virtually waterproof (but not quite) and a spectrum of jackets down to the very lightweight 'hardly water resistant' at all. The choice of jacket from this continuum depends on your intended use as the jackets at each extreme are quite different.

Montane's Dyno Stretch Jacket is just off the centre of this continuum towards the less water resistant end, so, while it will shrug off the odd shower its main function is to provide an extra layer of warmth and wind resistance wiithout compromising comfort. The super stretchy fabric means that movement is not curtailed in any way so its particularly suited to rough physical routes, scrambling and climbing.

It has a technical hood, with a wired peak, so it will deal with squally stuff, especially spindrift. There are no less than four pockets on the front of the jacket, two of which are map sized. Buy this if you are looking for a super comfortable, flexible additional layer for 3 season conditions over a baselayer.

lightweight, cosy, not especially windproof

Hard to categorise this. Basically it's a shirt or light jacket that will keep you a bit warmer. It's a single layer of nylon, or whatever, that's soft and stretchy. It's not particularly windproof and certainly not resistant to much more precipitation than light drizzle in summer. Basically it's a good layer to chuck over a t-shirt if it's cool, a bit windy, or a bit drizzly and you don't want to compromise breathability or comfort. I suppose you could layer with it. The fit is small, so size up if necessary.
