This stretchy, lightweight softshell still provides weather resistance but focusses on comfort in extremes. Designed for fast and light alpine ascents where weight, packsize and especially breathability are critical.

Montane says:

Constructed from lightweight and wind resistant CHAMELEON LT fabric which has a double weave structure, making it excellent for high output activities such as alpine climbing. Featuring two large Napoleon pockets and an under helmet hood, this jacket is designed for moving fast in the mountains when weight and breathability are key.

Montane's Alpine Edge Jacket uses the lightweight Chameleon LT fabric to provide stretch and comfort without sacrificing too much protection. The fabric is durable enough to stand up to scrapes on rockfaces, has a tight enough weave to keep out the majority of the wind and has a DWR treatment to help repel light rain. The key aspect of this fabric is its breathability which is perfect for fast and light activities, whether that's alpine ascents of hiking in the mountains.

To keep the weight down this jacket has minimal features but the focus is still there with articulated arms for reaching up on climbs, a slim, elasticated hood with stiffened peak designed to be comfortable under a helmet. There are two good sized chest pockets instead of hand pockets for ease of access with a harness on. The two-way front zip with storm flap is a useful addition which can often be overlooked with light weight kit.

Softshell or windshirt? A great jacket anyway

I always have a wind-shirt in my bag in the hill and have tried many over the years and worn through a couple entirely. While I still have a very light one for summer use/runs etc. I wanted one for colder seasons but previously had avoided softshell finding it heavy and stiff. This was a delight being light and very similar to a wind-shirt, but the textured fabric and features made it more comfortable and better when  worn in unpleasant weather (neither clammy inside nor clingy when wet). While in the softshell category here it is more like a windshell, packs and feels like a windshell so it's great! Pros: 2 good 'Napoleon' pockets which were big enough for folded map in an A5 Ortlieb. Long sleeves. Good hem with popper behind bottom of double ended zip. Cons: Not a smock (but sadly it seems all manufacturers have decided jackets with hoods when a heavier fabric). One day I will find one....
