UOG TOP PICK - RAB Zero G Down Jacket - Best Warmth to Weight Ratio in its class - We've singled out RAB's Zero G down jacket as one of our top recommendations because it manages to squeeze a full 130grams of the highest quality down into a jacket that only weighs 290grams - that's a better ratio than anyone else. The build quality isn't bad either.

Rab says:

Our new Zero G jacket is the quintessence of our down expertise, representing our heritage in creating the best down clothing and equipment for climbers and mountaineers.

We challenged our design team to create the ultimate alpine down jacket - super-lightweight, yet robust enough to stand up to the rough nature of fast-and-light alpine routes. The result is a game changer, the Zero G combines the highest quality 1000FP down with ultra fine Pertex® 7d Quantum fabric, resulting in an unsurpassed weight-to-warmth ratio.

The Zero G is a specialist piece for those who truly appreciate every gram saved yet require the high standards of performance needed for dealing with harsh winter conditions. All Rab® Down products are now RDS Certified (Responsible Down Standard). This ensures that our entire down supply chain can be traced so consumers can be confident that all down and feathers used in Rab® products adhere to the highest possible animal welfare and safety standards.

my size medium weighs 270 grams!

Really – as measured on two separate post office scales.

So let’s compare to the very popular Ghost Whisperer hooded jacket, which (according to UOG stats) weighs in at 236g and has 79g of 800 fill power down. So that’s 157g of material, stitching and zips.

The Zero-G has a stated 130g fill in size large, so let’s assume 120g in a size medium. Given my own measured weight that’s (270g-120g) 150g of material, stitching and zips.

The Zero-G has about 50% more down than a Ghost Whisperer but with a 1000 fill power, so that’s 87% ‘more puffy’ (1000/800 times 50% more down) for a weight penalty of just 34 grams!

So the insight from this is that if your investing in a hooded down jacket for ultralight uses, then it’s certainly worth considering getting a jacket like this one that is just a bit heavier than the lightest available option, but that has that extra weight devoted to more high quality down fill.

And, yes, the Zero-G jacket is very comfy and cosy and just generally awesome!

The only thing I would compare it to outside of UOG stock (and in a UK context) would be the legendary PHD Designs Ultra jacket, the quoted weight of which is 240 grams plus 35 grams for a hood. Also 1000 down fill power. So about the same weight as the Zero-G.

Conclusion: this jacket really is out there with the very best of what’s available right now.

Nicely made but not as warm as I expected

The jacket is nicely made and has a feel of quality.

I bought it because I wanted something warmer than my current down jacket. Mostly for wearing when stopped on the top of a mountain rather than actually hiking up the mountain.

I run warm when exercising but I do feel the cold when stopped for a while.

The jacket is a nice length - longer than many - which for me is good.

But its not as warm as I expected. Partly I suspect this is down to the small baffles - they don't let the down loft as much as it could - and therefore limits its ability to insulate.

I did a test - on one just above zero day I warm my usual down jacket - and was kept warm while walking the dog. Next close to zero day I wore this - and felt slightly cool - not cold.
