Of course a sleeping bag liner will keep your sleeping bag clean but it will also raise the temperature rating of your bag by a few degrees. I don't use one very often when backpacking because of the extra weight, though if I know I'm likely to get quite dirty I will. Some specialist liners are intended primarily to upgrade your sleeping bag.
