Suunto's Core watch is able to provide all the functions required for Trek and Travel barring GPS location, Altimeter, Barometer, Compass and Temperature.
Suunto says: The award-winning Suunto Core comes in a range of stylish design options, packing easy to use outdoor functionalities in a robust construction. Combining altimeter, barometer and a compass with weather information, the Core provides the essential features for adventures in the great outdoors. Designed to bring out the explorer in you.
Over the years I've settled on some core kit that I feel comfortable with when trekking in a foreign country, one of those bits of kit is an outdoor watch, and the key function that I tend to use (apart for the time functions of course) is an altimeter. When trekking in mountainous areas distance is often less important than altitude for figuring out where you are and how long its going to take to get to the next pass.
Knowing the temperature during the night can also be useful, by leaving the watch off my wrist I can get a spot temperature during the night which helps me decide what kit I need for future trips to remain warm and comfortable.
Suunto watches are among the best available and whilst the user interface is sometimes less than intuitive, once you use it you soon get the hang of it. Suunto's Core Watch is able to perform all the functions required for trek and travel barring GPS location (available with the Ambit 3).
The Core will also perform a range of functions related to training and high activity sports such as running/swimming/cycling and for these functions it may be worth buying a Core which includes the Heart Rate Monitor - although we don't stock the HR monitor versions we can order them in for you - email us for a quote.
