MSR's Hubba NX series tents are the lightest version of the Hubba tents yet still benefit from the classic Hubba design, featuring near vertical walls, a good blend of fabric and mesh and thoughtful features that make them more comfortable.

MSR says:

Reinvented as the most livable tent available for its ultralight weight, the bestselling MSR Hubba Hubba 2-person backpacking tent now weighs in at a trim 1.54 kg / 3 lb 7 oz. Ultra-compact and precision-engineered, the tent feels as light and efficient to use as it does to carry. From its optimized, symmetrical geometry and non-tapered floor that maximize space, down to its integrated, adjustable stake-out loops that speed setup, this tent redefines livability.

Whether you’re setting out to climb the Sawatch Range or circumnavigate Mount Rainer along the Wonderland Trail, the freestanding, 3-season Hubba Hubba tent lets you enjoy the full backcountry experience — including time spent in the tent.

MSR's Hubba Hubba NX tent is the lightest version of the 2 person Hubba Hubba series and one of our favourite tents. We like that the head height is maintained over a wide area, we like the long interior length giving you space to store your gear, and we like that its freestanding so you can pitch it on hard ground or move it around to find the best spot when choosing your campsite. The Hubba Hubba NX has two doors and two equally sized porches, a configuration which offers great flexibility and ease of use for two people - you get your own space!

The Hubba NX series differs from the Hubba HP series in that the flysheet is not cut as close to the ground, and there are reinforcements added to the HP version making it more suited to stormy conditions.

There is now an alternative version called the Hubba Hubba Shield which comes with cutting-edge Easton Syclone Poles and an improved Xtreme Shield waterproof coating that lasts up to 3x longer than normal coatings. However, this does come at an added cost so be sure to check out the Hubba Hubba Shield before making your decision on which tent to buy.

If you would like a footprint for this tent you will need the MSR Universal 2 Footprint (sold separately).

Tough and Lightweight

In 2018, we took this tent along the Great Divide Trail, nearly 1000 km through the Canadian Rockies in one go, with up to 10 days of continuous use, at a time.

In that time, the tent was pitched on snow, gravel, rocks, marshland (no choice!) and sometimes even grass (NB: we were using the MSR footprint for really pointy stuff). There were no obvious issues with water penetration through the groundsheet, although there was some spotting when it was very wet for prolonged periods of time.

It was big enough for my wife and I, along with our 30 ltr bags and the two porches are really useful for storing any other stuff that can be left outside the main tent overnight. When it's packed, it's small enough to fit across a backpack.

There were occasions where the rain did not stop...like, at all! The tent was put away wet, taken out and pitched wet, and then taken down and carried wet - the wet weight is significantly more than the dry weight. It was aired and dried as much as possible and the fly held up very well, with no obvious leaking although the stitching on the pole connector did fail, the connector itself remained usable and this only happened after 15-20 days.

The separate footprint, inner and fly could be erected in various ways - nail the footprint and inner down first, in high wind then poles, then fly; peg the fly down in the heavy rain and reintroduce the rest under the relative shelter. It is versatile and simple to erect in a hurry (5-10 min if pushed).

We still have it and use it; most recently it has been on a 10 day trek up the CWT in Scotland and we're planning to re-waterproof it (just in case) an take it along the King's Trail in Sweden later this summer, travel restrictions allowing.

It is a very decent bit of kit and we would definitely recommend it to others.

Roomy and light for a 2 person tent

Really easy to pitch. The fly can be a bit of a faff and comes up a little short. The two porches are a real bonus, I tend to use this as a one person tent so I can stash my gear in one porch and use the other for entry/exit. The design is such that you can pitch the inner on it's own so great for nights out on the beach, you get a great sunrise and bug free. It's excellent quality, I have only given it 4 stars as I did have split pole but MSR stepped up to the plate and replaced it free of charge. It's easy to sit up in the tent, held up pretty good in Force 3 winds, stash pockets inside are handy for your stuff and you can suspend a small light in the roof without banging your head. You get a neat bag with this tent to which makes it "Uber" easy to break camp quick. A difficult tent to replace in my opinion.
