We love Big Agnes's Copper Spur HV UL series because they are truly freestanding with excellent headroom, near vertical walls and two decent sized porches (except Copper Spur HV UL1) for this class of tent. The Bikepacking title relates to shorter pack size for the tent poles and a bag that you can strap to your bike.

Big Agnes says:

Three season, free standing, ultralight bikepacking tents.

From our award-winning, best-selling line of Copper Spur HV UL tents comes a bikepacking tent designed for on and off-road, two-wheeled travel. The pole segments have been shortened for optimal handlebar, pannier, and saddlebag storage. The burly compression stuff sack with a daisy chain makes storing these tents anywhere, a cinch. Enjoy the comforts of extras like an oversized storage pocket, webbing for dry helmet storage, and all the other features that make two-door Copper Spur HV UL tents the bomb.

We really like Big Agnes's Copper Spur series of tents because they are not much heavier than the Fly Creek but they are truly freestanding and you get a good head height which is maintained over a wide area due to the cross pole arrangement. This 4-way high volume hub pole design increases it's strength by 25% and it's usable interior volume by 20% compared to previous versions of the Copper Spur.

The walls are nearly vertical and there is a good mix of fabric and mesh on the inner tent - this give a good compromise between privacy, warmth and wind resistance - making it suitable for a wide range of conditions.

The Copper Spur HV UL 2 has two doors and two decent sized porches for a tent in this category with internal mesh pockets for bits and bobs. External storm guying points at the business end give reassurance for windy conditions.

This tent is designed for bikepackers, the short pole sections and custom storage bag let you stow the tent away on your bike. You can strap it to your handlesbars or stuff it in a pannier, even the poles will fit at only 12" long.

Almost perfect..! But for one pretty major problem

I've now used the tent in a variety of conditions and was a bit disappointed to find that the fly vent won't stay shut in windy and rainy conditions - in blustery conditions when wind direction is changeable it just isn't possible to angle your tent to avoid the fly vent facing the wind and getting blown open. The shape of the tent also limits your ability to re-pitch it out of the wind, especially if you're on a slope. I got quite a bit of rain through the tent that way (pitched on flat ground) and ended up having to pin my waterproof trousers between the inner and flysheet to avoid ingress through the fly vent. This isn't an issue I've experienced with similar backpacking tents which have fly vents. Part of the problem is the fly vent is very close to the top of the tent, which would take the most force in windy conditions, and that makes it more likely that the little Velcro dot which secures the fly vent shut will only get blown open. Apart from that, pack size, weight and living space for this tent are all excellent, and the inner stash pockets are terrific for making the tent more livable. Like other reviewers, I'd also recommend getting a 2-person tent even if you're planning to travel solo - 2 would be quite a squeeze. I'd caution though that the issue with the fly vent makes this very much a fair weather tent for me rather than a true 3-season tent for British conditions.

Nicely thought out

This is a premium tent that is well thought out and excels for bikepacking, as you'd hope. Pitching the tent is really straight forward, quick and it is nice to have a tent that goes back into its bag without a struggle. It's a great space when pitched. Given the minor penalties in weight and pack size over the UL1, this makes for a luxury 1 person and cosy 2 person tent. The 2x side doors and 2x vestibules make for a convenient space for 2 people. If you can, get the UL2 even if you think you'll be mostly sleeping solo. Pack size is very good and the tent fits between my 38cm (center to center) road bike handelbars without interfering with the hoods or gear changes. Minor niggles: 1. Pegs! the amount of pegs supplied is somewhat minimalist. While you are unlikely to need to pitch all guide ropes, it is nice to have the option given the price paid. 8 are supplied which leaves 2 'spare', 10 would be ideal. 2. Straps! the velcro straps supplied for attaching to the bike are likely sufficient but don't inspire confidence. Voile straps are much better for securing the tent and avoiding unwanted rub.
