Mountain Hardwear's Hylo 3 tent is a hybrid single/two skin design that is free standing and maximises internal volume with good use of its pole structure.

Mountain Hardwear says:

The perfect balance of weight, space and protection for the avid backcountry trekker. Innovative design adds generous venting so you get the benefits of a double-walled tent in a lightweight single-wall hybrid construction. High-ceiling height, full-size door and large vestibule make this the right tent for backpacker who wants to shed grams without sacrificing comfort.

Mountain Hardwear's Hylo 3 Tent is a hybrid design - that is its mainly single skin with two sides being two skin - that is the doorway/porch creates a double skin on that side and there's a second skin on the opposite side of the tent.

You would design a hybrid tent if you were trying to save weight, but the Hylo isn't the lightest tent in the box, the reason is its generally bigger than other two person tents and maximises the internal volume with good use of the pole structure. Also its made from heavier fabrics (relatively speaking) which will have a longer life than the ultralight fabrics used on some other tents. Thirdly its free standing, which, if you're going to be camping on rocky barren areas can be a useful feature if its tough to get pegs in.

Not everyone likes single skin tents because of the condensation that can build up and drip onto the groundsheet, but there's no denying you can make bigger or lighter tents using this method, and for some people condensation (if it does occur) is not a problem, because you just deal with it in the morning.

Mountain Hardwear have also designed in as much ventilation as they could which reduces condensation, although in my experience this only works if there's a breeze to create an airflow. The door is mesh, this aids ventilation, is cooling in summer but can create a cold tent in cold conditions - especially if a wind gets up.

Its also worth pointing out that the Hylo tents have only one door, this can sometimes be a pain if you are using it at its designed 3 person capacity - not such an issue if you are using it as a spacious two person tent.

In summary then, the Hylo tents are a good choice if you want a spacious, free-standing and (relatively) tough tent for use in three season conditions, but don't mind occasional condensation.
