UOG TOP PICK - Big Agnes Copper Spur Series - Best for ultralight internal height and volume - We've singled out Big Agnes's Copper Spur series because they are truly freestanding with good headroom, near vertical walls and two decent sized porches (except Copper Spur UL1) for this class of tent.
Big Agnes says:
We make Copper Spur tents a risk-free investment: full-featured, ultralight backpacking shelters that are truly easy to pack, set-up and inhabit. Dual doors and steep vertical walls make long trips with a partner or two comfortable. There’s enough internal space to ensure that windy, rainy afternoons spent playing dominoes will be easy like Sunday morning.
We really like Big Agnes's Copper Spur series of tents because they are not much heavier than the Fly Creek but they are truly freestanding and you get a good head height which is maintained over a relatively wide area due to the cross pole arrangement.
The walls are nearly vertical and there is a good mix of fabric and mesh on the inner tent - this give a good compromise between privacy, warmth and wind resistance - making it suitable for a wide range of conditions.
The Copper Spur UL 3 has two doors and two decent sized porches for a tent in this category and no less than 10 internal mesh pockets for bits and bobs. External storm guying points at the business end give reassurance for windy conditions.
