The Allak 3 is a lighter, more versatile version of the Staika. It is still a strong, durable four season dome tent for three people. With the stable three pole design this truly freestanding tent can easily withstand the wind, rain and snow alike giving you a solid, trustworthy shelter from whatever the weather throws at you.

Hilleberg says:

Since its introduction over 10 years ago, the two-person Allak has been one of our most popular tents. For 2019, we are introducing a three-person version, the Allak 3, and renaming the original model the Allak 2. Both remarkably light yet impressively strong Allak models are well-suited for anything from summer paddling to winter ski mountaineering, and from year-round backpacking to all-season peak bagging.

They are easily light enough for mobile journeys, where you move your camp every day, and their two-entrance construction allows for superb ventilation options in warm weather. At the same time, the Allak's three-pole dome structure is strong enough for summer or winter base camp use in all but the worst conditions, and the fully freestanding construction make it ideal for tough pitching conditions, such as rocky ground and sand. In addition, its two integrated vestibules are set parallel to the sleeping area, giving excellent access to gear storage space as well as ease of entry and exit. Since its introduction, paddlers have valued the Allak’s ability to be pitched nearly anywhere, while backpackers choose it for its roomy stability and light weight. Mountaineers appreciate both the Allak’s freestanding design, compact footprint, and its roominess, as well as its ability to deal with snow loading. And taller adventurers find its length a welcome comfort.

Our Verdict

Hilleberg's Allak 3 Tent balances strength and weight to give you a fantastic three person, four season tent. The three pole design used on the Staika and Soulo is used here on the Allak to give a freestanding tent that stands up brilliantly to strong winds, torrential rain and heavy snow while still being light enough to carry on summer backpacking trips. Admittedly, it is not the lightest tent but it doesn't take long to see that this tent is highly durable and a great place to be in the worst weather and shared between three it's certainly manageable.

The tent pitches easily once you've got the hang of it. The three poles crossing over give instant strength, even without using the guy lines being pegged. The inner is already attached which makes things so much quicker and easier to set up and pack away. One area of concern is condensation. It has never bothered me as I know many tents will suffer in certain conditions but since the fly goes all the way to the ground, getting enough air flowing through the vents can be an issue.

The details in the design, materials used and quality of construction result in a fantastic tent. Hilleberg focus their designs on quality, durable tents that provide shelter from the worst conditions. They use a label system to differentiate their tents and intended uses. The Allak 3 falls into the Red Label category which are: ideal for trips in any season where lighter weight is the priority and are quite capable of standing up to challenging terrain and conditions.
