Designed to give you 180 degree views it is a unique concept and works really well. The size of the tent makes it very livable and it is really versatile when the weather is bad, as it still allows you feel outside while providing protection so you can still cook or relax in comfort.

Mountain Hardwear says:

For backpackers and campers who appreciate extra square footage and open, airy architecture. The Optic offers a new twist on traditional tents with full-size doors on adjacent sides that zip away to create an open vista. Various tie-backs for the vestibule allow you to customize your view up to 180 degrees. With more space than a standard 2-person tent, the Optic 2.5 easily fits two of you plus whatever else you want to bring along.

Mountain Hardwear's Optic 2.5 Tent is an awesome tent for making the most of the outdoors. The main selling point for this tent is the 180 degree views you can get. The two doors are on adjoining walls of the tent so when they are opened and rolled back you get an amazing view out with only the corner of the tent with the pole obstructing it. The Optic is named 2.5 due to the fact it has more than enough space for just 2 people. You can comfortably fit in loads of extra kit, your faithful four legged companion or in my case, my 2 year old. The extra space makes this a very comfortable, versatile and livable tent which is great for times when you might need to be in it for longer than expected.

The size and the amazing views do come at a cost. That cost, without doubt is the weight, with the Optic 2.5 weighing in at well over 2.6kg when packed. I've found that the tent is best for car camping or short hikes to set it up as a basecamp. At this weight it's not comfortable or easy walking long distances over technical terrain with it. There are still other practical features that make camping with the Optic more comfortable such as some good sized internal pockets to stash your kit it and colour coded tabs to make pitching faster and easier.
