The Lunar Solo Tent is a lightweight and compact 3 season tent with a good size sleeping area and vestibule, ideal for ultralight back packers.

Six Moon Designs says:

The Lunar Solo for 2018 is newly constructed with 100% Silicone coated Polyester material. The Canopy is 20D material and the floor has been constructed with 40D material for additional strength.  The canopy stretch has been decreased along with the packed volume. We have also made the main guy line a reflective cord and guy outs for the corners are also now reflective.

The Lunar Solo's distinctive low hexagonal shape easily spills the wind no matter the direction. Short, steeply sloped sides, handle snow or high winds with ease. A generous canopy covers a 26 sq. ft. sleeping area plus 8.5 sq. ft. of vestibule storage. The 48" peak height, set in the middle of the tent maximizes room for sitting and taking care of chores.

The sleeping area is a surrounded 6-inch deep bathtub floor, topped by 6 inches of mesh. This ensures excellent ventilation while keeping you separated from low canopy walls. This keeps you drier on those occasions when condensation forms on the canopy.

The vestibule is set on the long side of the tent to maximize views and ventilation when fully open. Close it and you've got phenomenal protection from the worst storms.

A 2012 redesign raised the canopy 3" (up to 48") and offset the pole. The result was considerably more headroom. Extending the floor to 90" and making end walls vertical enhances sleeping for taller individuals. The slight reduction in floor space is more than compensated for by better weather handling. With more vertical walls, the Lunar Solo easily sheds wind and snow.

Six Moon Design's 2018 Lunar Solo Tent has kept the classic design but seen an upgrade in materials to improve performance and durability. The incredibly low weight remains and with the versatility of being able to use trekking poles or tent poles to put this up provide a lot of advantages over many other traditional solo tents. There is a decent sized vestibule for your kit and it helps for ventilation. As with any single skin shelter, condensation is going to affect it but it isn't too bad once you've got the hang of using this tent in different conditions.

The design and shape of the tent make it surprisingly weather resistant with strength in windy conditions and the large bathtub floor protecting against rain. It definitely takes a while to get the pitching right with this tent so practice at home first and don't be surprised if there are lots of adjustments to make on your first few outings. At such a light weight the Lunar Solo is in competition with some seriously high end, light weight tents but the trekking pole design and low cost, by comparison, keep this as an amazing option for weight conscious backpackers.

Some recent feedback from Six Moon Designs themselves "One thing I noticed in the {Cairngorm Treks} review is how they were using the side guy outs, we generally recommend that you go straight (horizontal) out to a stick or trekking pole with the side guy out, wrap around the stick and then run the line at a 45-degree angle to the ground stake. This will increase the interior head space and stabilize the walls in heavy wind loads." Great advice straight from the horse's mouth.

Help and advice:

  • Full Vestibule provides protection while still maintaining good ventilation when closed. Fully open, the vestibule maximizes ventilation and view.
  • High Vent removes excess moisture build up.
  • Zipper Vestibule Closure makes opening and closing the vestibule a snap.
  • Easy Tensioning Adjustment makes keeping the tent taut a trivial task that can be accomplished while still in your sleeping bag. Re-tension straps have been added to all tie out points.
  • Floating Canopy allows the canopy to be set to different heights.
  • Floating Floor reduces floor stress and helps to minimize punctures from sharp objects.
  • Optimized Sleeping Area is oriented to maximize usable space, ventilation, and view. A peak height of 48 inches gives you plenty of headroom.
  • Center Pole Support significantly improves the ability of the tent to handle wind and snow loads.
  • Single Hiking Pole Support reduces the amount of gear need.
  • Internal Gear Area keeps your gear easily accessible.
  • Oversized Screen Door allows easy entrance and exit while keeping the front pole out of your way.
  • Ultra-light Waterproof Canopy is made from high strength 20 denier Silicone Polyester.

Light, fast, reliable

A bought a Lunar Solo for the HST but took it on a canoe along the Great Glen Trail to give it a whirl. 5 nights of rain, wind, midges and repeated repitching in the wet.

This was just the tent for me - up in a matter of seconds, stood up to the conditions with ease, kept the bugs out and gave me a good night's sleep - and great view of the lochs in the morning. It also didn't mind being held up with a slightly larger than ideal canoe paddle - the flexibility in the pitch is really helpful here (although I didn't get quite as much depth on the bathtub as I wanted in some of the rain).

The pitching is a matter of experience - you really can end up with very different results based on tensions and peg positions so some playing about is required to find what suits you - and then remember how you did it.

Well thought out design

I've had this tent over a year now and used it in summer and winter, I'm constantly astonished by its performance. It's like the Tardis, much roomier inside than seems possible for its tiny footprint. I didn't seal the seams but not a drop got in during a torrential summer storm. Loads of headroom too. It's luxury tarp camping to be realistic, combining the beauty and simplicity of a tarp with a lot, but not all, the protection of a tent. I can't stress enough however, the absolute importance of following the exact instructions for pitching until you are familiar with it, otherwise you will be frustrated and convinced someone somewhere is having a laugh.

Product FAQs
Do the Six Moon Designs tents and shelters come already seam sealed?

Six Moon Designs currently only offer non-seam sealed tents and tarps to their dealers. Due to the volume of seam sealing for their own direct orders this service is also not currently available for special orders either. SMD are hoping to be able to start offering this service to dealers again in the future.

If you want to seam seal your SMD tent, the product to use is Gear Aid Seam Grip Sil (also known as McNett Silnet but recently rebranded)
