Nemo's Spike 2P trekking pole tent provides a roomy shelter at minimum weight, its floorless so you'll need a groundsheet and it needs a short pole for the back - but its well designed and is a stable structure when pitched in this way. The doorway is compromised slightly by the need to keep the trekking poles in tension.

Nemo says: Designed with guidance from professional backcountry hunters and anglers, the Spike™ 2P trekking pole supported shelter is meant for exploration off the beaten path.

Nemo's Spike 2P Trekking Pole Tent is well thought out and great as a shelter if you want to use a bivy bag or just a groundsheet. Its an alternative to a tarp as extra protection when the weather turns poor, but it scores over a tarp by being pitched down to ground level effectively shutting out wind and rain.

You use your trekking poles to give it support and structure though it also needs a short pole at the rear of about 34cm in length, Nemo suggests using a stick for this purpose but frankly there'll not always be one available and it may be prudent to carry one. The top of the rear panel has a reinforced pocket to house one end of the pole so it will take almost any size stick.

Inside at the rear the tent has a sewn in groundsheet - this is good because when using a groundsheet its easy for your feet to slip off in the night risking a wet sleeping bag, with the foot end being closed in the risk is removed.

Access at the front is compromised because of the need to keep the trekking poles in tension but there's still adequate room to get past the poles in the doorway. There are pegging loops at each point on the apex - by using long guylines you could get the trekking poles to setup vertically allowing access through the middle.

There's no doubt the access is the main drawback but there are very few tents providing such internal volume at such a low weight, certainly none made from 30D silnylon, which is tougher than most ultralight shelters.
