MSR's Elixir tents combine MSR design and quality with lightweight rather than ultralightweight materials to produce a series of tents that perform well but are heavier and less costly than MSR's leading edge products.

MSR says:

Surprisingly lightweight and easy to assemble, the new MSR Elixir 2 tent is an extremely livable performance backpacking tent—and a great value for all its features. Unlike many tents in this class, our freestanding tent design features two large doors, two large vestibules for storing gear, and true-to-size capacity for two.

The versatile tent balances breathable mesh fabric with solid canopy fabric to provide ventilation, warmth and privacy, while the included footprint offers multiple setup options, including a freestanding Fast & Light pitch with rainfly. Whether you’re planning your first backpacking trip or your next one, the Elixir 2—the most livable backpacking tent in its class—is your remedy.

MSR's Elixir 2 Tent is all MSR in terms of its quality of materials, design and construction, there's no compromise on performance but there is on weight. The Elixir series are heavier than similar sized MSR tents because they're made with slightly heavier materials, heavier also means cheaper (in our world), so MSR have produced an excellent and relatively inexpensive tent where the only compromise is its weight.

We like the blend of mesh and fabric panels on the inner tent for venting, warmth and privacy. These tents have two doors and storage areas, a wide area head height and near vertical internal walls.

High quality and spacious tent

This is an excellent tent for two, with easy pitching and better than average headroom. It proved a superb choice for a short cycletouring trip in Scotland. Not in the ultra light category but easily manageable cycling and lighter than my old ultimate horizon tent which I used extensively around Europe some 20 years ago. It is also slightly bigger. Pitching inner first attracts some negative comments but a positive is that this makes it extremely easy to erect, then move to a better spot if required. In the event of rain it can be pitched outer first, as a previous reviewer has mentioned. I did try this and found it a bit of a faff, but with a bit of practice I think it would be an acceptable alternative to avoid a soaking inner. For cycle touring, the poles are a bit long so need to be stowed on the rack rather than the pannier, and a bit bulky to be lashed to the frame. Another plus is the groundsheet, which can be used separately as a picnic rug, so was kept at hand for easy access while on the bike. This model has guy lines but I never felt the need to peg them out, the tent is stable, but it is reassuring to have an additional means to increase stability in high winds. It was cool nights when I used it with a breeze, which was evident inside the inner as there is a large area of mesh. On windy days I think this would be felt in the tent quite prominently, but this keeps condensation down. All in all an excellent tent for a cycletouring couple, perhaps not ideal for solo backpacking due to the weight, but acceptable nonetheless, and cavernous for one.

Another well made MSR product.

Another great tent from MSR. First things first, it's not as light as the Hubba or the Hubba Hubba but the materials are thicker than those used in the Hubba's. I must say that I have used a Hubba for over 5 years and its in just as good condition as when I bought it but I needed a tent which could be used on extended sea kayaking trips, which could stand up to being compressed in a hatch for days on end and would stand up to more abrasive conditions. The Elixir ticks all the boxes. It's free standing making it easy to pitch on different surfaces (sand etc), and it is made for two people (not two stick people!). The stuff bag is big enough to put other items in (you could put a gear shed in as well!) so no fighting to get it back in it's bag when the weathers against you. It has two good sized porches which means you can use either if the wind changes overnight avoiding a face full of driving rain first thing in the morning! The only things I would add is a universal gear loft and add some extra guy lines (the attachment points are there on the fly). The other great thing the Elixir has is fly vents- ideal for those times your pitching on to already wet ground.
