UOG TOP PICK - Big Agnes Copper Spur Series - Best for ultralight internal height and volume - We've singled out Big Agnes's Copper Spur HV UL series because they are truly freestanding with excellent headroom, near vertical walls and two decent sized porches (except Copper Spur HV UL1) for this class of tent.
Big Agnes says:
Three season, free standing, ultralight tents.
Winner of a 2017 Backpacker Magazine Editors' Choice Gold Award, the Copper Spur HV UL series is designed with a high volume hub to maximize strength and increase living space without adding weight. Large dual zipper doors and steep wall architecture make backcountry trips with a smelly partner - or three - more comfortable than you may have thought possible. Our proprietary patterned double rip-stop nylon fabric is incredibly durable, to stand up to your biggest adventures.
We really like Big Agnes's Copper Spur series of tents because they are not much heavier than the Fly Creek but they are truly freestanding and you get a good head height which is maintained over a wide area due to the cross pole arrangement. This 4-way high volume hub pole design increases it's strength by 25% and it's usable interior volume by 20% compared to previous versions of the Copper Spur.
The walls are nearly vertical and there is a good mix of fabric and mesh on the inner tent - this give a good compromise between privacy, warmth and wind resistance - making it suitable for a wide range of conditions.
The Copper Spur HV UL 4 is a big tent and as such doesn't quite achieve the same vertical walls associated with the other Copper Spurs, but its a big tent that's also very lightweight so there has to be some compromises somewhere. External storm guying points at the business end give reassurance for windy conditions.
