Top Quality Socks

I’m very particular about the socks I use for longer treks. Sock choice can mean the difference between a great walk or days of suffering with blisters. It’s one bit of kit I’m happy to spend more on.

Having long been a fan of Smartwool socks, in recent years I felt that their quality and durability had declined. After trying various alternatives, I settled on Darn Tough Light Hiker Micro socks which tick all the boxes – comfortable, durable, blister free. I planned to use them for the 2019 TGO Challenge but just before leaving I was offered a pair of Point 6 Hiking Light Crew Socks to try, a brand I’d never heard of before. Despite reservations about taking a sock I’d not used before, I decided to take them along with my usual Darn Tough socks.

After some Googling, I discovered that Point 6 was created by the original founders of Smartwool after selling the Smartwool business in the mid-2000s. These are people who know all about Merino wool and making excellent socks, and in the time since selling Smartwool, they have worked with new technologies for selecting wool, spinning yarn and weaving.

I came back from walking coast to coast across Scotland extremely impressed with the Point 6 socks having alternated between them and Darn Tough during my 2 week crossing. They got a stern test in unseasonably hot, dry weather then cold, wet conditions. They performed superbly and kept my feet comfortable during long hot days and didn’t rub when wet.

There is little awareness of the Point 6 brand within the UK but don’t let that put you off. I can heartily recommend them and plan to add more pairs of Point 6 socks to my drawer.
