Outdoor Research's Transcendent Beanie is a great product - a down filled beanie that maximises warmth for weight. Outdoor Research have even built in a tiny stuffsack with a hanging loop to make storage easier.

The bottom edge is half elasticated to allow a degree of fit and the baffles are sewn with elasticated thread making the whole thing a stretchy close fit - even better for keeping you warm. By using a superlight nylon shell the weight has been minimised even further.

This product may look daft but it looks better on and its a wise choice, you could use it when you're in your sleeping bag - or in place of a hood if your jacket doesn't have one, or anywhere, anytime to get a warm head fast. Its big enough to be pulled down over the ears as well.

Down hat squad

Another unique and awesome product from Outdoor Research! I had never seen a down hat before, and cannot really understand why not as this one is amazing. It looks surprisingly stylish when worn, is windproof and very warm indeed. So warm your head may get slightly damp with sweat. I always wear one in my sleeping bag to keep my ears warm during the night, and now consider it to be an essential. Of course, there are cheaper hats out there, but none that are this warm for this weight. I really like the compressibility that this hat offers, I found that it can melt away into a zpacks wallet pouch or similar ultralight stuff sack to keep it safe. If this hat gets caught out in the rain, I was quite surprised to find the down didn’t clump. The face fabric offers a load of water protection, and I would say that no water came through the fabric. This was a pleasant surprise as the down was not advertised as hydrophobic, and I would have expected it to clump up and lose its warmth. As for the durability, as with all ultralight nylon shell fabric, be kind to it. It will not react well to being pulled through a gorse tunnel or rubbed against the top of a cave, but I have used it extensively in Scotland and the south and the fabric has been fine with no real signs of wear and no feathers escaping, but I wouldn’t fancy its chances on abrasion resistance. As other people have mentioned, all the sweat and grease from your head and the slightly musty smell of the feathers themselves mean it is necessary to wash this hat after extended use to stop it from smelling. It would be nice if future generations of this hat could include an anti-odour treatment, as the feathers take a while to dry out and then have to be torn up to reloft the hat. Note that as this is down, it needs to be able to loft to stay warm, so it will not really work well under a helmet or under a really tight rain hood. The fit is good, if you have a big head make sure you get a big hat to prevent the loft being crushed out of it. All in all a great hat with awesome warmth, water and wind resistance, and absolutely unrivalled weight and pack size. JCC
