Outdoor Research's Stormtracker Heated Gloves use battery operated heating elements to keep your hands warm with a layer of Primaloft and leather palms & fingers.

Outdoor Research says: As seen in the Winter Outside Magazine Buyer’s Guide, the breathable, windproof GORE WINDSTOPPER and ALTIHeat battery-powered heating technology of the versatile StormTracker Heated Gloves spar with the most heinous weather.

Durable water-resistant leather palms withstand punishment, and a TPU injected mold design at back of hand adds a layer of protection. Athlete favorites, these gloves tackle alpine climbing, ski touring or ice climbing.

Primaloft uses a unique microfibre structure which is specially treated to create a core with similar physical and thermal properties to down meaning you will be well insulated against the cold. It's compressible, breathable and has excellent water repellency so you remain dry, warm and comfortable even under the most extreme conditions.

Outdoor Research's Stormtracker Heated Gloves are quite warm to start with, being filled with a moderate layer of Primaloft Insulation, and they can be worn as softshell gloves without the batteries inserted. As a standalone glove they are very nice, with a long cuff and soft leather palm and fingers.

There's a zip at the cuff to make pulling them on easier and when cinched in the cuff is snug around the wrist, suitable for wearing inside the sleeve of a waterproof. There's quite good dexterity for a padded glove because the Primaloft is only moderately thick.

The Stormtracker gloves really appeal when the batteries are used to heat them up. In the box are two batteries (one for each glove) and a charger. When fully charged the batteries are inserted into zipped pockets on the inside cuff, and to turn them on there's a raised button on the outer cuff.

This button is also used to control the power settings. There are three settings, the low setting offers upto 8 hours battery life, the Medium p to 5 hours and the High setting up to 2.5 hours. Although we haven't used these yet the quoted times are often measured under ideal conditions for products such as these and its safe to assume you will probably get less than these times.

The Stormtracker gloves are quite heavy, that's the batteries, but if you want a glove that provides heat rather than just insulates your hands then this is the price you'll pay. We're looking forward to trying them.

We can get extra sets of batteries should you wish them.

I've had these gloves for 2 years now.

I don't use them regularly - they are close to zero and below gloves.

But when I need them I really appreciate the extra warmth from the heated glove.

When I find them most useful is taking photos in zero degree temperatures. To manage the camera I need my hands out of gloves. By the time I've faffed around taking a photo or three my hands get quite cold.

And normally with gloves no hand inside means they get cold too.

But with these heated gloves they stay warm so as soon as I put my hands in them my hands start warming up.

The heat is not furnace like - they are warm rather than hot even on the hottest setting. But its enough to take the chill off.

Battery life is fine. Walking up hill I switch off the heat. Its only really needed when stopping for a while or walking downhill.
