UOG TOP PICK - Thermarest's NeoAir XTherm sleeping mats - Lightest and warmest winter insulated airbeds - We've singled out Thermarest's NeoAir XTherm mats as one of our top recommendations because they offer the best insulation for their weight, suitable for winter camping on very cold ground. They also offer real comfort and a choice of mummy and rectangular shapes.

Thermarest's NeoAir XTherm mats combine the comfort of an airbed with the insulation value required for sleeping in the coldest conditions and on snow.

Thermarest says: The XTherm air mattress delivers the greatest warmth-to-weight ratio available in any air mattress by far, with a new, softer, textured no-slip fabric for better next-to-skin comfort and a quieter rest.

Multiple, reflective ThermaCapture layers give the XTherm air mattress true four-season warmth without the weight or bulk usually found in a winter-worthy mattress.

Stuff sack and repair kit included.

Insulated airbeds offer a great combination of comfort low weight and small pack size - in many ways they are now the ideal sleeping mat. Some people however prefer self inflating mats because if their mat develops a leak there is still a piece of foam to lie on if your airbed develops a leak you have nothing.   Other people find they sometimes roll off an airbed and prefer a thinner mat between them and the ground.

The lightest of the Thermarest NeoAir mats use very light fabrics which have been reported to make a `crinkle` sound as you move around on them - they are likened to sleeping on a crisp packet - my experience is that this is minimal - after using a NeoAir for a couple of years I didn`t realise it crinkled until someone pointed it out to me! Now I know - I still don`t notice it when kipping down.

State of the art.

I've owned the Thermarest X Therm for over 2 years now, and it's still as fresh as a daisy after over a month of
Car camping and backpacking trips!

Packing to the size of a 1ltr bottle the xtherm doesn't take much room in your pack And is one of the smallest available. It's amazing to strike out with a light bag knowing that you are still going to be very comfortable.

The pad comes with an inflation sack which pumps the pad up by mechanical force like a bellows or can be inflated by mouth for true lightweight backpackers. The pump
Sack will reduce condensation which may lower the performance of the matt in winter or even lead to ice crystals possibly.
It is a 30 denier top material with a 70D bottom for enhanced durability, striking a balance between the lighter and less warm Xlite and the heavier but still less warm Trekker.

The warmth from the Xtherm is staggering with a deep heat felt in seconds where the body directly touches the pad around the hips and shoulders. It's really very astonishing and suited to winter use and even cold sleepers such as myself in all-round conditions. I use the matt with a thermarest Quilt and notice just how warm it is as the ambient temperature builds up between the matt and quilt with my body sandwiched in between on a night.

Some People complain of a 'crinkly' noise when sleeping on the matt which although is apparent, seems to be a rather critical complaint for such an amazing piece of equipment and technology. I am
6 foot and can sleep comfortably on the pad although I may have to reorientate myself on sloping ground during the night but any noise has never woken me up. Apart from these small complaints, the matt is easily THE most comfortable thing I have ever slept on. I can sleep on my side and my hips do not touch the ground at all whilst having plenty of give if you deflate the matt Strategically. It is very well made, comes with a lifetime warranty and comes highly recommended for winter and cold-sleeper use as a state-of-the-art matt!

Luxury without the weight (or rustling)!

This seems quieter than my short NeoAir which is a blessing. Not like sleeping on a crisp packet!
Nice and warm, comfortable and comes with an excellent pump bag which can be used as a stuff sac for other items in the rucksack (albeit with a small hole at one end). The surprisingly effective pump bag allows you to pump up this full size thick mat in a couple of minutes without getting light headed and without introducing lots of condensation into the mat.
