UOG TOP PICK - Thermarest's UberLite Series Sleeping Mats - Best for low weight and packsize without compromising comfort - We've singled out Thermarest's UberLite mats as one of our top recommendations because they deliver the lightest weight and smallest packsize yet are among the most comfortable mats available.

Therm-a-Rest's lightest airbed. From alpinists to thru-hikers, those who need the lightest gear have a new standard for ultralight comfort with this superlight pad.

Therm-a-rest says:

As the absolute lightest insulated air mattress available, the UberLite keeps your pack featherweight on the trail. Our proprietary construction provides the critical warmth needed in the backcountry. Boasting 2.5 inches of our legendary NeoAir comfort, the minimal UberLite makes a big impact during nights in the backcountry. The unique fabrics we used for this pad meet our strict durability standards. Stuff sack and repair kit included.

As technology and manufacturing techniques improve over time, brands are able to make lighter and lighter gear. Therm-a-Rest have improved upon their XLite range with a lighter mat with an even smller pack size. The UberLite is now their lightest airbed and it builds on the performance we got with the XLite mats.

As a sleeping mat it's the standard width and standard height for a Therm-a-Rest and you can feel the insulative properties of the mat after laying on it for just a short while. To get all of this comfort into a mat that weighs so little and packs so small is a real feat of engineering.

The UberLite still crinkles like the XLite and original NeoAir but notably less so. The face fabric is slightly softer than these other mats and a bit slippier on a silnylon tent floor, but once you're on it there's no chance of it moving around the tent.

The Good and Bad

I had exactly the same experience as reviewer Enrico - first failure was a home test after unwrapping followed by a one night 'field test' in the Brecon Beacons - failed on both occasions! However, UOG gave superb support and the replacement mat survived an extended alpine trip in August with no issue. Pack size & weight are unbeatable but insulation, as warned by the manufacturers, is minimal so I suffered a couple of uncomfortable nights with a skinny minimalist WM quilt. The jury is definitely out for now though...

Good in my own experience

So before using the Thermarest I had an old Hi-Gear self inflating mat that was huge, heavy and horrendous to sleep on if, like me, you're a side sleeper. By comparison the Thermarest is comfortable for me even on uneven ground and packs down to virtually nothing. I found that my UL pillow would slide around all over the place which was annoying, however I've discovered if you put a stretchy shirt over the end of the pad you can then shove the pillow in underneath and I sleep so much better! I would definitely recommend this to people.
