Thermarests NeoAir Trekker mats offer full comfort, decent insulation and robust face fabrics while keeping the overall weight and packed size well within that carried by most backpackers.
Thermarest says: Lightweight, go-anywhere mattress for three-season backpacking.
The NeoAir Trekker mattress is our lightweight jack-of-all-trades air mattress for backpacking, travel, car camping and just about everything else. Featuring a new Regular Wide size this year, the Trekker uses our reflective ThermaCapture™ technology, pushing its comfort range well into spring and fall backcountry trips. Light yet durable fabrics, combined with exceptional comfort and compactness offers go-anywhere versatility. Stuff sack and repair kit included.
Triangular Core Matrix
Our most advanced design uses patent-pending technology to minimize heat loss with two stacked layers of triangular baffles, creating hundreds of individual cells in our warmest mattresses. Simultaneously this internal structure adds an unmatched level of stability to every NeoAir mattress.
ThermaCapture Radiant Heat Technology is a proprietary reflective coating that we apply to a range of surfaces. By reflecting radiant heat back to your body that is otherwise lost, this extremely lightweight coating turns that surface into a very efficient heat reflector, amplifying warmth without the excess weight or bulk of added, conventional insulating materials.
Insulated airbeds offer a great combination of comfort low weight and small pack size - in many ways they are now the ideal sleeping mat. Some people however prefer self inflating mats because if their mat develops a leak there is still a piece of foam to lie on if your airbed develops a leak you have nothing. Other people find they sometimes roll off an airbed and prefer a thinner mat between them and the ground.
The ThermaRest NeoAir Trekker mats are the general purpose mats in the Thermarest airbed range, they are a bit heavier than the lightest mats because they use heavier fabrics on the top and underneath making them more durable, they are also rectangular, offering more comfort than mummy shaped mats that are cut to save weight. The insulation offered is also well within that mid range - so there are perhaps better choices for winter use but the Trekker is ideal for three season use.
Overall weight is still within the range carried by backpackers, especially if you dislike mummy shaped mats, in which case the weight of the Trekker mats are pretty good, even compared to the lightest offerings.

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
