Exped's Downmat HL Winter sleeping mats have the highest R-Value (insulation) we've seen, are thicker than usual at 9cm, making them more comfortable and yet are seriously low weight. They are a super comfortable and provide insulation equivalent to any lightweight mat on the market - rated to -32C its an ideal choice for lightweight winter outings.
The DownMat HL Winter is the worlds lightest mat at comparable warmth and comfort levels! It is extremely compact when packed and features a tapered shape that fits into the smallest of tents. It includes the Schnozzel Pumpbag UL M.
Next-to-skin comfort and anti-slip GripSkin honeycomb-pattern coating. Laminate is air tight and impervious to hydrolysis.
Down certified by RDS, a stringent animal welfare standard.
Exped's DownMat HL Winter Sleeping Mats are insulated airbeds. Airbeds are easily the most comfortable camping mats available and its only in recent years that they have been made light enough for backpackers, airbeds with insulation go a step further and keep you warmer - this enhances the performance of your sleeping bag and in my view is well worth the extra weight, though you need to match the quality of insulation to the conditions you are likely to encounter.
If you are camping in winter conditions you will most probably be camping on snow, or even ice, in this case a sleeping mat that provides adequate insulation is absolutely essential. Exped pioneered the use of high quality down in sleeping mats but even just a few years ago these were heavy and bulky items. The DownMat HL Winter mats achieve the same levels of insulation value at a fraction of the weight and packed size, they do this by using thinner face fabrics, doing away with the integrated pump and trimming the shape from a rectangle to a mummy shape. What you get with the Downmat HL Winter mats is comfort and awesome insulation.
Exped rates the DownMat HL Winter mats for use in temperatures down to -33C so its of expedition standard, but of course using it at higher temperatures just means that you will stay warmer.
Weight and pack size are extremely good, the DownMat HL Winter mats are 9cm thick which contributes to its enhanced insulation value - but also makes it a bit more comfortable than the standard 7cm mats. It has slightly enlarged baffles along each side to help keep you centred on the mat. They are mummy shaped to save weight, some people prefer rectangular mats because they are easier to stay on but if that isn't a problem for you then the HL mat is a better option because its lighter.
There's a single valve for inflation and deflation which also minimises weight. There's a Schnozzel pump bag included which is essential as using your mouth to inflate the mat will dampen the down reducing its effectiveness.
The DownMat HL Winter is a good choice if you need a mat for winter use but don't want to carry lots of additional weight and bulk.

|Help and advice:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
