ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.

Soon looses comfort

These are great at first. They pack quite small and are comfortable to sleep on all night even on your side. However I recently found on a four week long walk that near the end of the trip I was waking in the night with sore hips and shoulders. Examination showed that the dimples were loosing their shape and that it had become permanently compressed. I think they have limited durability and I'm not particularly heavy at 11 stone. I'm now going to take the weight and pack size penalty by trying the new Exped FlexMat Plus Mat instead.

Next Level in Foam Mats

I've had two very expensive inflating mats fail, one after about 100 nights using it and another after about 50 nights, I won't mention names but both were from top brands. I'd had enough so tried this for the piece of mind it gives and I've not been disappointed. I have to mention I use another piece of a multi-mat, cut at torso length underneath and that combination works exceedingly well, weight is kept low with a good nights sleep, no fuss, no worries, 3 seconds to lay out, no risk of seams blowing, no valves failing, no punctures, no hassle, it WILL last ages.
