The Crash Out Mat provides an amazing blend of low weight, small pack size and low price. This is a winning combination, especially when combined with a good level of comfort.

Gram-counter Gear says:

The lightest go-anywhere mattress for Summer backpacking.

Gram-counter Gear's Crash Out Mat uses a range of simple but effective features to minimise weight and pack size without sacrificing comfort and usability. The curved baffle design does a great job of contouring your body providing the right amount of support where it's needed. With 20D fabric it's not the toughest mat but it is still comparable to many other lightweight mats on the market. We have yet to have any issues, such as punctures, and believe that the use of this kind of fabric is worth it for the weight saving.

With a simple multi-function valve it's really easy to use, with the one-way inflation part making it pretty efficient to blow up quickly and it dumps air quickly when deflating by opening up the whole valve. This simple design works well and helps maintain an impressively small pack size.

This mat is suitable for three season use for warm sleepers (as long as you're not on frozen ground or snow) but you can extend the use of it by pairing it with the Gram Counter Gear Featherweight Foam Mat for colder conditions or just added protection.

Help and advice:

  • Multi-functional valve: Simple and effective non-return valve. High flow-rate allows quick and easy inflation and deflation.
  • Compact: Space saving design allows the mat to fold down to just half the size of a 1L Nalgene bottle.
  • Durable: The 20D rip-stop Nylon construction with TPU coating results in a durable, abrasion resistant and waterproof mat.
  • Comfortable: Curved baffles aligned to the body's contours provide support and comfort for back and side sleepers alike.
  • Weight: 332g (excludes storage sack)
  • Dimensions: 51 x 180cm
  • Tapered foot: 38cm
  • Thickness: 6.3cm
  • Pack size: 18 x 8cm
  • ASTM R-Value: Estimated at 1.0 (This mat has not been tested, this is an estimate based on sleeping mats with similar specifications)

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.

Comfy and light

I am very impressed with this mat! I really like the deep grooves as I tend to sleep on my side and I find they're very comfortable for my arm/shoulder. There will always be some concessions made when making such a light and (relativity) cheap mat! However, for the most part I find this very comfortable and warm, definitely gives me a good nights sleep. It is a little longer than I need it to be (I'm only 5'6), so if there was the option for different lengths that would have been good. But all in all, I cannot complain.

tested at home

Tested at home, not on camping, yet. The material is very thin, not sure is a good or bad. I can only assume that it can be very fragile with rough grass or rock. To be fair, isn't this the same for other sleeping mats? One thing is sure, it is lighttttt + confortable. Cheers
