Exped's Downmat UL Winter mats are rated to -24C, around expedition standard, full sized and rectangular they are an ideal choice for lightweight winter outings.
Exped says: DownMat UL Winter is the ultra light version of the DownMat 7, 20% lighter yet with identical insulating values. It does not feature an integrated pump but includes the Schnozzel Pumpbag for swift inflation. This is the ultra light version of the DownMat with identically high insulating properties but unmatched packed size and weight. Quick inflation with the innovative Schnozzel Pumpbag that doubles as a waterproof compression bag. The down fill reduces heat loss dramatically and the thick air cushion absorbs unevenness of the ground for superb comfort.
Next-to-skin comfort and anti-slip GripSkin honeycomb-pattern coating. Laminate is air tight and impervious to hydrolysis.
Top quality down insulation: tested according to IDFB standards, and certified by RDS, a stringent animal welfare standard.
Exped's DownMat UL Winter Sleeping Mats are insulated airbeds. Airbeds are easily the most comfortable camping mats available and its only in recent years that they have been made light enough for backpackers, airbeds with insulation go a step further and keep you warmer - this enhances the performance of your sleeping bag and in my view is well worth the extra weight, though you need to match the quality of insulation to the conditions you are likely to encounter.
If you are camping in winter conditions you will most probably be camping on snow, or even ice, in this case a sleeping mat that provides adequate insulation is absolutely essential. Exped pioneered the use of high quality down in sleeping mats but even just a few years ago these were heavy and bulky items. The DownMat UL Winter mats achieve the same levels of insulation value at a fraction of the weight and packed size, they do this by using thinner face fabrics, doing away with the integrated pump and using a single inflate/deflate valve. They retain the rectangular shape of the original mats and are 7cm thick.
Exped rates the DownMat UL Winter mats for use in temperatures down to -24C so its of expedition standard, but of course using it at higher temperatures just means that you will stay warmer.
Weight and pack size are extremely good, the DownMat UL Winter mats are 7cm thick which is pretty standard and makes the ,mat very comfortable. It has slightly enlarged baffles along each side to help keep you centred on the mat. These mats are rectangular in shape as opposed to mummy shape, some people prefer rectangular mats because they are easier to stay on.
There's a single valve for inflation and deflation which also minimises weight. There's a Schnozzel pump bag included which is essential as using your mouth to inflate the mat will dampen the down reducing its effectiveness.
The DownMat UL Winter is a good choice if you need a mat for winter use and it has to be rectangular, but don't want to carry lots of additional weight and bulk.
