UOG TOP PICK - Exped's AirMat HL sleeping mats - Best for low weight and packed size without compromising comfort - We've singled out Exped's AirMat HL sleeping mats as one of our top recommendations because the Regular size ('M') is our lightest full sized sleeping mat which nevertheless delivers comfort and a tiny packed size. The lack of insulation is what keeps the weight down but also limits it to 2/3 season use.

Exped says: The lightest, warmest and most comfortable sleeping mat in its category - and super packable! Next-to-skin comfort and anti-slip GripSkin honeycomb-pattern coating. Laminate is air tight and impervious to hydrolysis.

Sleeping mats are about comfort and insulation, airbeds are easily the most comfortable of all the mat types and most have a degree of insulation built in, the lightest however don't have any insulation as this adds weight - Exped's AirMat HL M Regular Sleeping Mat is among the lightest and despite having no added insulation it ticks the boxes in all other respects.

Weight and pack size are extremely good, the Airmat HL is 7cm thick so it will match the comfort of most of the Exped range and it still has the slightly enlarge baffles along each side to help keep you centred on the mat. Its mummy shaped to reduce weight further though some people prefer rectangular mats because they are easier to stay on. A further weight saving is made by using a single valve for inflation and deflation (Exped pioneered the two valve system).

Because of the relatively low insulation value Exped rate this mat for use down to 4C, but that's quite cold and covers a wide range of conditions, if you do most of your backpacking in the summer this could be the best option. Even for occasional use in colder weather you could team it up with a closed cell foam mat to boost the insulation value.

Exped Mini Pump included.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.

Ok - for a while.

For me, ultralight inflators are a poor investment. This one lasted maybe 10 trips until the internal baffles gave way and the mat inflated with huge bulges all over the place. Very uncomfortable to sleep on. Exped will probably say I over inflated, but gear should be more robust than this. When new it is reasonably comfortable though a bit noisy when you move, and rather narrow. Great pack size. But I wouldn’t buy again and would not go for this unless you are going ultralight, you keep inflation low. I’ll stick with more robust self inflators from now on. Shame, first piece of Exped kit I have not loved.
