Exped's AirMat HL sleeping mats are among the lightest available and have one of the smallest packed sizes, with no additional insulation its still good down to 8C.

Exped says:

Ultralight, air-insulated double sleeping mat for warm conditions, be it summer camping or travel in warm climates. This two person mat weighs less than a one liter bottle of water and packs to an amazingly small size. Exped's GripSkin technology provides a slip-free surface and a quiet night's sleep. The included Schnozzel Pumpbag UL M  ensures quick, moisture-free inflation and doubles as a waterproof packsack for a sleeping bag, quilt or clothing.

Sleeping mats are about comfort and insulation, airbeds are easily the most comfortable of all the mat types and most have a degree of insulation built in, the lightest however don't have any insulation as this adds weight - Exped's AirMat HL Sleeping Mat's are among the lightest and despite having no added insulation they tick the boxes in all other respects.

Weight and pack size are extremely good, the Airmat HL is 7cm thick so it will match the comfort of most of the Exped range and it still has the slightly enlarge baffles along each side to help keep you centred on the mat. This Duo version is more of a rectangular shape but wider at the torso end.

Because of the relatively low insulation value Exped rate this mat for use down to 8C, but that's quite cold and covers a wide range of conditions, if you do most of your backpacking in the summer this could be the best option. Even for occasional use in colder weather you could team it up with a closed cell foam mat to boost the insulation value.

Help and advice:
  • Air cells on the sides are thicker and give the mat a cradle shape that prevents you from rolling off the mat.
  • Exped's proprietary GripSkin technology makes for a quiet, slip-free night's sleep!
  • Proven FlatValve Technology: separate inflation and deflation valves, non protruding and more durable than traditional valves.
  • Quick inflation with the Schnozzel Pumpbag that doubles as a waterproof compression bag for a sleeping bag or spare clothes. The Schnozzel Pumpbag works effectively in sub zero temperatures and allows inflation of the mat in 2 minutes. A separate flat deflation valve with one way flap enables quick deflation.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
