Everything in the HighLite`s design is intended to reduce weight and promote compressibility. First the .9 ounce ExtremeLite shell fabric goes without saying. No other shell fabric is this light or packed with so many threads per inch.

This specialized ExtremeLite bag uses a one way #4 1/2 YKK coil zipper that is cut to half length.

While the horizontal seams are sewn-thru the vertical seams are baffled with 1 1/2` netting to allow unimpeded loft so the effect of its 850+ goose down is fully realized. Its efficient cut not only reduces bulk and weight but reduces excess internal volume so quick heating is realized! At only 455g total weight no other bag is as light as warm as well made or as handsome as our HighLite.

Highest Quality minimum 850+ Fill Down

Western Mountaineering down gear has an awesome reputation in the US and that reputation is beginning to build on this side of the pond. Very high quality materials design and construction results in the lightest bags available for a given warmth.

An example of their attention to detail is their quoted 850+ fill power down used in all their bags: WM quote this figure even though their down generally gets higher ratings in official tests this is because they feel that the official pre-testing preparation enhances the down quality!

* Western Mountaineering state: 'We independently verify own temperature ratings through our own testing, customer feedback and design knowledge. Most of the items in our catalog we have been making for years, which means we have lots of prior knowledge from everyday consumers on what ratings are accurate. We have also EN tested our bags. In every case the EN rating is lower than our posted rating. This means our ratings are more conservative. We do this to ensure that almost everyone will be happy in our bags at the temperature we publish.'

Review Summary - 5 out of 5 based on 3 ratings.
July 28, 2020 | Malcolm Edwards

The best down bag I've ever had, minimalist, cosy, very packable, everything about it is just quality and the 2 degree lower comfort rating is spot on. I went for an long sized bag after reading another review, I'm happy I did and would recommend doing so, it gives the down fill more chance to loft next to the sewn through baffles. The hood is comfortable although the Velcro on the zip closure did not work well and eventually I added two micro snap fasteners. I get in and out of the bag without using the zip and only use the zip to vent the bag when too warm at about 15 degrees. Perfect.

good but problem with zip

I've had mine for 7 years and have used it quite a lot. It's warmth to weight ratio is magnificent - (I've used it occasionally in temperatures of around zero Celsius) and it's relatively wide so, even though I am the maximum height for the small size, I can just about curl up inside it which makes it warmer. I think with hindsight I might have preferred the extra length from the next size up as my feet are jammed at the bottom if I need to enclose my shoulders in it. I'd have given this a definite 5 star but for a problem with the zip. Mine doesn't seem to have a locking mechanism which means that (a) even when fully done up it is essential to have the velcro over-strap in place or it just pulls open with no resistance, and (b) it is unusable with the zip partially done up. I've just sent mine off to have the zip replaced at some considerable expense. WM may have resolved this problem by now but it would definitely be worth checking before spending this amount of money!
