Crux sleeping bags are warm, waterproof and light. They have been made with the best down fill, waterproof/breathable fabrics and construction techniques available. Although very expensive, their 20–30 year life expectancy (even with heavy use) means they are the best investment you could ever make in an outdoor product.

Crux says:

The Torpedo 900 has been developed for Himalayan climbing over 7000 metres and is also suitable for Alpine-style routes on 8000ers. Filled with extremely high quality 850 (EU rating) Polish down, and protected with a waterproof shell, the 900 can be used in open bivouacs or single-skin tents.

Like the 500 and 700, the Torpedo 900 is available in three lengths and two widths. For additional flexibility, the Torpedo 900 can be upgraded by combining it with a Protium, Deuterium or Tritium sleeping-bag liner from our new Radioactive range.

| eVent Waterproof Fabrics use Direct Venting Technology - a proprietary and patented waterproof membrane allows millions of tiny pores to breathe at their full potential. Sweat vents directly to the outside of the fabric in one easy step. Click Logo to read more..

We think the rating is very conservative for the Crux as the additional down compared to other bags with a similar rating will make a difference. But in any case the real story is the eVent shell which makes the bag a great choice for altitude as well as tarp camping where a conventional bag could so easily get wet.

The eVent shell is highly breathable so any concerns you may have about being damp in the morning because of a build up of condensation are unfounded. Having used the bag ourselves, we have not experienced any problems at all.

Another reason for choosing the Torpedo over other bags could be its durability and hence longevity. The eVent fabric is much more wear resistant than the superlight shell fabrics used on ultralight bags and the chunky RiRi zipper ensure a Torpedo will go the distance. If you need a tough bag for a long trip the Crux Torpedo range seems to have been designed with this in mind.

We sell a lot of water resistant sleeping bag covers. If you camp out a lot in the UK under a tarp then the Torpedo bags could be your Nirvana and you can save the cash you would have spent on a cover!

Please note: The short and medium length bags are black with a red inner (as seen in the image), where as the long length bags are black with an anthracite coloured inner.

Temperature rating

  • -8˚C Comfort
  • -18˚C Lower limit
  • -35˚C Extreme

The comfort rating represents the lowest temperature at which a standard adult FEMALE can have a comfortable night’s sleep.

The lower limit represents the lowest temperature at which a standard adult MALE is deemed able to have a comfortable night’s sleep.

We like the EN13537 ratings at crux. Going by our own extensive experience, we feel they accurately reflect the temperature limitations of each sleeping bag for a comfortable night’s sleep. Individual tolerances may allow some people to go beyond these figures, but we believe this is at the discretion of the user and is not something to be claimed by us.

EN13537:2012 - Look for the 2012 label for the most accurate rating; In 2012 the EN system of testing sleeping bags was re-vamped - the new testing procedures are more rigorous, producing more consistent results than previous tests. 2012 results tend to rate sleeping bags as poorer performing by a few degrees when compared to previous test results, even though the sleeping bag may be identical, or even better.

This means that comparison between an EN13537:2012 rated bag and an EN13537:2002 rated bag are particularly difficult - our advice is to use the new EN13537:2012 rating to compare with other bags who have also been rated in this way.
