UOG TOP PICK - Sea to Summit Spark Series Sleeping Bags - Best Warmth to Weight ratio - We've singled out Sea to Summits Spark sleeping bags as one of our recommendations because its a minimalist in the true sense of the word, it only includes a few key features but delivers exceptional warmth given its very low weight.

Sea to Summit says:

ULTRA-DRY Down protection and warmth in a minimalist package

“When you need a sleeping but don’t want to be weighed down by one, what’s to be done? Until now you either slowed yourself down with something inadequate or took the spartan option and suffered without. Now the Spark has changed the game completely. Neither comfort nor performance need be sacrificed!” Tim Macartney-Snape

Using the warmth of 850+ loft 90/10 goose down, the amazing moisture protection of ULTRA-DRY Down, and a micro-weight 10D Pertex shell and 15D lining, we have created one of the best warmth for weight minimalist sleeping bags available.

The Spark is an ultra light bag with several key uses. Its balance of size, weight and warmth make it excellent as a summer sleeping bag, especially for weight and space concious cycle tourers and ultra light walkers. Its size and warmth rating works well as a liner bag, slipping inside another sleeping bag to add one or two seasons to its rating.

The secrets of the Spark’s warmth to weight are in the premium quality down and high performance microweight shell and liner fabrics, the 1/3 length light-gauge #3 YKK zip and the sewn-through transverse baffle construction.

The Spark compresses so small, we had to re-engineer our compression-sacks to make one that reduced sufficiently.

The ULTRA-DRY Down protection makes the Spark an impressive hard-alpine or adventure racing sleeping bag, where down has never before been a viable option, and weight is simply not tolerated.

1/3 Zip Mummy

The Spark is cut as a close-fiitting mummy bag. The full hood, foot box and short zip maximise fit and warnth while keeping weight and bulk to a minimum.

Sea to Summit's Spark sleeping bags are true minimalist bags that use the lightest materials and highest quality down to construct bags that deliver exceptionally high warmth to weight ratio, when compared to other similarly rated bags. The construction is excellent and although there is some compromise on features the key ones are all present and correct: Hood with drawcord, boxed foot, zip baffle and micro compression sack.

EN13537:2012 - Look for the 2012 label for the most accurate rating; In 2012 the EN system of testing sleeping bags was re-vamped - the new testing procedures are more rigorous, producing more consistent results than previous tests. 2012 results tend to rate sleeping bags as poorer performing by a few degrees when compared to previous test results, even though the sleeping bag may be identical, or even better.

Has limitations

This is a superb lightweight bag, but it isn't for me. I'm 80+ Kg and 5'11". I don't have very broad shoulders but even so this bag is too small to be comfortable for me. It has cold spots, also if you wriggle then warmth "pumps out" of the bag because the single hood toggle (no neck toggle) comes loose. In spring in the UK, at temperatures around 3 degrees C, I had very cold, uncomfortable nights. A smaller person could layer up with liner, down jacket and thermal underlayers, but for an average size man or above this bag restricts you too much for a layer system to comfortably work. Also the short zipper doesn't permit good enough ventilation in warmer weather. This bag does NOT permit a flexible sleep system for an average build man. Great for smaller framed men and women. Ultralight and packable.
