Lightwave's Firelight sleeping bags offer amazing warmth for weight, there's no mystery though, they use the very best quality ethically sourced down in a box wall constructed bag.

The Firelight 250 has a full length zip that lies on the top of the bag. The zip is protected by a single baffle. There is a neck collar that can be adjusted to close completely around the neck to provide a complete seal.

The Firelight 250 comes in three sizes and is supplied with a compact stuff sack and a large storage bag.

Typical use: The Firelight 250 is an excellent bag for those who are travelling extremely light and do not expect cold nights. It is ideal for travelling when one is usually going to be indoors, and for trekking during the summer months at altitudes of up to 2000 metres.

Aside from this obvious quality we like some of the design features, for example the full length zip is on the top of the bag rather than the side - this seems easier to use somehow - when testing a Firelight 450 I could find the zipper much more quickly, and because it starts at the top of the bag I was less likely to turn over leaving it underneath me.

Another curious point was the lack of zip snag, every bag I have ever used snagged at some point, but the Firelight never did. I could quite work this out - but I note the zip is a smaller gauge than usual - which could be it.

Buy these bags and you are buying quality.

Construction

The construction describes how the down is held in place (otherwise all the down would fall to the bottom) and what features are incorporated to maximise heat retention or, conversely, regulate your temperature. A bag as light as the Firelight 250 does not need to have sophisticated features as it is not designed for use in temperatures much below zero.

Fabrics

Lightweight fabrics allow the down to loft and reduce the weight of the bag. Although there are lighter-weight versions of the Pertex Quantum fabric we are using, they offer a negligible saving in overall weight and, having a lower tear strength, are easier to damage.

Amazing - so light and compact yet soo roomy and oh so warm!

I researched until my head hurt before buying this. I am quite a broad chap and need room around my shoulders - many of the sleeping bags are just too narrow for me, uncomfortably so. I tried Rab, Mountain Equipment etc and found them too restrictive. This one had a better width shown on UOG website, the weight looked really promising and it supposedly goes down to +1C. Well I think all the specs are spot on. It was really roomy, really comfortable and really warm, without being too warm. It also packs up really small - you honestly dont think its going to go in the stuff sack but you keep squashing it in and eventually its all in. OK, so there is no neck baffle, but its actually more comfy just using the face baffle anyway - if you dont want your head inside you can just use that as a neck baffle and stick your head out. At 6' 2" I had to get the long, its actually lighter than UOG says at 580g. Its longer than I need - which is a shame there isnt a size less than 6' 6" that I could get as that would be lighter again. Not a big problem though and actually quite nice in some ways. The foot area is supposedly water resistant fabric, which does seem to be the case as we pitched on a slope one night and I kept sliding down with my feet touching the condensation inside the tent - the bag coped fine. Its not cheap but it is truly a remarkable product.
