Montane's Featherlite sleeping bag is not the lightest but has a highly technical construction and is laced with useful features that work.

Montane Says:

The Featherlite is a performance summer backpacking sleeping bag. It has a tailored anatomical form, an uncompromised construction and uses high quality materials. Its technical features and micro pack size make it perfect for any summer mountain explorer for whom weight and comfort at the day’s end are critical to the venture. Just as MONTANE Featherlite clothing has defined a whole “fast and light” category, this sleeping bag will become an indispensable and classic piece of kit.

Montane's Featherlite Sleeping Bag is first and foremost well constructed, Montane have applied an incredible attention to detail in order to construct their bags to be the best they can be - a glance down the features list highlights some of the construction decisions taken in order to reduce cold spots or stop down migrating.

Focussing on the things you can see reveals some really neat touches, the antisnag zip baffle finally looks like it works - Montane have stitched two small piped baffles the full length of the zip, these really do the trick and its difficult to see how the zip could possibly snag.

The footbox is interesting - its shaped to accommodate feet that are pointing into the air - assuming you are sleeping on your back - if this is you then it just might be the innovation you've been looking for - if you sleep on your side the bag will twist slightly to accommodate your feet - we're luke-warm on this as a feature.

We really like the inner fabric though - the PEAQ Down lining is still and out and out nylon fabric but it feels less clingy than the Pertex Quantum that you will find lining the lightest bags. The hood is well designed to give good coverage, more like a garment hood.

On the base of the bag Montane have added silicon dots to help keep the bag in place on your mat - these do make a difference, and inside the bag you have the mp3 pocket and a second pocket for a waterbottle - both useful features.

So, if you are not buying the lightest sleeping bag in its class you are buying a very able bag which won't annoy you with jammed zippers, will feel more comfortable than some lighter bags and has a really good fit, from hood to collar to footbox.

EN13537:2012 - Look for the 2012 label for the most accurate rating; In 2012 the EN system of testing sleeping bags was re-vamped - the new testing procedures are more rigorous, producing more consistent results than previous tests. 2012 results tend to rate sleeping bags as poorer performing by a few degrees when compared to previous test results, even though the sleeping bag may be identical, or even better.

This means that comparison between an EN13537:2012 rated bag and an EN13537:2002 rated bag are particularly difficult - our advice is to use the new EN13537:2012 rating to compare with other bags who have also been rated in this way.
