CRUX Torpedo 700 Waterproof Down Sleeping Bagight. They have been made with the best down fill waterproof/breathable fabrics and construction techniques available. Although very expensive their 20–30 year life expectancy (even with heavy use) means they are the best investment you could ever make in an outdoor product.
There is no better insulator than down. Unparalleled in its ability to trap air incredibly light and highly compressible down is unbeatable but for one drawback – it must be kept dry. A waterproof down sleeping bag is therefore essential for alpinism.
We use the highest grade of Polish goose down commercially and consistently available. Our sleeping-bag shells are made from eVent fabric – the most breathable and waterproof fabric we know. Inside the bag the baffles containing the down are welded to the inner face of the shell avoiding all stitched seams. For the zip – like stitching a potential area of water ingress – we use the highly water-resistant Riri Aquazip to ensure that the bag is as waterproof as humanly possible.
Crux Torpedo sleeping bags are available in a choice of three fill weights: the 700 is the bag for the active mountaineer climbing winter alpine routes and peaks around 6000 metres in South America and the Greater Ranges.
||||eVent Waterproof Fabrics use Direct Venting Technology - a proprietary and patented waterproof membrane allows millions of tiny pores to breathe at their full potential. Sweat vents directly to the outside of the fabric in one easy step. Click Logo to read more..|
Our lightest -4C rated sleeping bags weigh 600-800grams. The RAB Alpine 400 is a kilogram and has an Endurance outer which adds a degree of water resistance. The Torpedo 700 weighs a lot more than this but has a lot more down in it and is waterproof.
We think the rating seems very conservative for the Crux as the additional down will make a difference, and in our opinion the bag seems much warmer than other bags with similar ratings. But in any case the real story is the eVent shell which makes the bag a great choice for altitude as well as for tarp camping where a conventional bag could so easily get wet.
The eVent shell is highly breathable so any concerns you may have about being damp in the morning because of a build up of condensation are unfounded. Having used the bag, we have not experienced any problems at all.
Another reason for choosing the Torpedo over other bags could be its durability and hence longevity. The eVent fabric is much more wear resistant than the superlight shell fabrics used on ultralight bags and the chunky RiRi zipper ensure a Torpedo will go the distance. If you need an tough bag for a long trip the Crux Torpedo range seems to have been designed with this in mind.
We sell a lot of water resistant sleeping bag covers. If you camp out a lot in the UK under a tarp then the Torpedo bags could be your Nirvana and you can save the cash you would have spent on a cover!
