The Elite version of the Laser 20 manages to shave off over 100g in weight yet still gives you a versatile pack ready for serious competition. A lightweight, functional winner that's ready to go.

Terra Nova says:

This extremely lightweight 20 litre pack is a simple, streamline design which is ideal for adventure racers and backpackers looking for the lightest weight kit.

The pack is made with Litetex ripstop nylon fabric which has a DWR finish on the outer and PU coated backing for good water repellence and stain resistance.

Terra Nova's Laser 20 Elite Pack is a streamlined, no frills, race ready pack. The use of quality, lightweight materials shows that this pack is a serious contender for adventure racing. The roll top closure adds versatility meaning the bag still keeps its shape when you're carrying less kit. The compression cords help with this too and are also great for stowing extra layers on the go so you're not stopping every time you need to add or take off layers which is a massive benefit during races.

Compared to the non-elite 20L version of this pack there is less padding on the waist straps and back but this is a weight saving compromise. The waist strap pockets are also smaller on this version but this is offset by the fact that the mesh pockets on the side are much larger. This pack definitely places function over comfort, especially with a decent load, so you've got to understand the importance of the low weight in these packs.

Good, but needs some improvement

Got this pack in the manufacturer's outlet, and I think it was OK for the money but not sure I'd pay full price. After several months, it is holding well however I am growing more and more frustrated by the (supposed) roll-top closure: there's only a 10mm velcro strip along but no stiffener! This means that even if you fold it four or five times (a good roll-top only needs twice) the pack can still open and lose the contents. This is bad. The narrow Velcro is insufficient to keep the closure properly secure, yet is annoying because it keeps sticking to itself, or to a wool jumper or other clothes you may try to keep in. On my digital scales a strip of suitable plastic weighs 2 (two!) grams so it's the same weight as the useless Velcro. Furthermore, there is no means of having foam or stiffener or a hydration bladder at the back. But there is an overbuilt sternum strap that weights 20 grams in its own right. If only there was a dual layer fabric on the back - to keep an hydration bladder or a piece of foam in - this would weigh half of what the overbuilt sternum strap does. It's another bad choice that is detrimental for the real use of the pack. So this is a good minimalist rucksack, that can do an overnight trip with no problems, the fabric is strong enough and able to withstand some rain. The regular shape of the pack means you can carry a good amount of kit: I can fit a Six Moon  Designs Lunar Solo tent plus small sleeping bag, small cooking kit, the minimum of toiletries/1st aid, plus spare underwear and some food. Pretty good! But it has some fatal flaws, especially the closure at the top which is not secure and could be better with no weight penalty.
